Pre Pay taxi

hey there, a bit new to all this lark. was wondering how the pre-paid taxis work? i.e, you get your slip and take to any taxi or are there specific ones??

hi crazyboots welcome to india mike and india.
the prepaid taxi is nothing but just to fix a price with bargaining. before that you need to ask a local how much it cost from place A TO PLACE B.

Generally this is how prepaid taxi works -
1. you pay at the counter(the amount is based on the destination). the reciept you get mentions the taxi number.
2. you find out that particular taxi(from a long queue of prepaid taxi)
3. you give the taxi driver his half of the reciept at the end of the journey.

There is very little room for bargaining, in my experience. A little, but very little. They have a price list of destinations.

What you should never do is allow the driver to ask you for more money at your destination.

A slightly different methodology is in use at Chennai Central railway station. Here the booth allocates a car to you; the cars are metered taxis, and you pay at the destination according to the meter.

cheers Nick-H; I will be flying into Delhi and was wondering about mobile phones, is it worth buying one locally and if so are they relatively inexpensive? I would use it for calls to my family in Punjab and back in the UK.
