I've been going to AmEx in Connaught Circus since 1975! If you had an AmEx card, they would hold your mail (before the internet, very important!), cash our T-checks and were a lifeline on our India trips. Kind of a home base as we went in & out of Delhi.
I guess using an ATM is still the best way nowadays, but I love knowing I could cash a check if I wanted to. Not sure how to establish a good working account but I'll be sure to find out if we ever get back there (hoping for 2010).
