I like looking at this site to see what's happening in and around India, weatherwise.

Handy thread left behind by Marius: Year-round weather stats for Leh & Kargil
The temps look to be in Celsius, not sure about the rainfall. Millimeters, inches?

The weather charts are good but I've been finding it really hard to find out whether it's possible to go to northern India and Nepal in August without frying or drowning - would the holiday be ruined before it even began? Advice on this point much appreciated...

Is Christmas a safe bet all over then or just south?

Have you gone through this thread and its links at all? It can get chilly up north (even in the plains, and more so than you might think; so below 10C at night, close to O if you're unlucky); freezing in the mountains. The northern plains will generally be quite pleasant still by day, say lower 20's to lower 30's or so, and all of it varying per year (or even per day or per area) of course.
It shouldn't have to stop anyone from visiting the north in (the arguably short) winter; just don't count on T-shirt weather only then. Having frozen my butt off up there in winter once (at what turned out later to have been around 7C, colder than you might think if you're not dressed for it), I since prefer to carry something warm unused rather than have it the other way around. |

? Strange way to do it then, thanks for my time.
You can start a thread of your own in most any forum; but some are restricted; such as this "India For Beginners" forum, which is meant as a collection of handy threads to newcomers, so without too much interference by more of the same old stuff. In most (sub-) forums, just look at top left where you'll find a button saying "new thread," then take it from there. |

Hm, yes. It used to be you could delete your own posts, but not any longer, as it was open to abuse. What you can do in such a case is edit it (itself an option that is limited to a few days) to simply leave a message saying <emptied> or whatever.
Anyway, sorry for any crankiness, and hope you find your answers. |

nb An afterthought and since I'm not sure if it's ever been brought up on this thread specifically:
Coming from Western Europe or possibly the Americas or some other (at times) habitually cold place, it can be hard to conceive of just how persistent the cold can be, even if it doesn't strike you as excessive on paper. At home, you can probably run across the street in a T-shirt even at 5C (if indeed you ever do; in other words, it may just not strike you as very cold in theory, until you find yourself in that position) and rest assured whatever shop/restaurant/home/transport you end up in will be heated. Not so in India, where you'll often find places just sit out the short winter. So it can be very hard to warm up anywhere; making the overall experience again that much more pervasively cold (until with any luck you are, indeed, chilled to the bone, certainly if combined with any dampness, and it often is; even though you might find such temperatures theoretically acceptable at home). |

Hey everyone, first time on and looking around. We are planning a 4 - 6 month trip of India next year and will soon be getting into our itinerary but our trip which was going to be from February on is now being put back till Mid March. We are starting in the South so should be ok at that time. Are we crazy to be doing the North in June / July period?
