No, that's Lalibela. Gondar is the former/ancient capital of Ethiopia at an elevation of over 7,000 feet. All the interesting tourist places are reached by flying from Addis and your friend will probably organize a itinerary/tour for you.

Sounds like you will see India & all your other places and plan as you go and that's probably the best way. You will add and subtract depending on where you are and how much time you have. I think I can only be helpful in a general kind of way about India or elsewhere. It's pretty hard to plan a whole year in advance!

Sounds like an very exciting year coming up!

Hmmm, it looks as if I'm not allowed to post a new thread, so how do I post a question? I seem to have read that since the fall of the US $ India is now keener on the Euro. Is this true? Should I have my travellers cheques made out in Euros instead of US$? I'm off to India next week, so I'd appreciate a little help here Thanks.

You can, just not in this sub-forum (the India For Beginners forum that this thread is in). That is so as to limit it to threads that are thought to be handy for first-timers indeed.

No real advice about your question, others will. Since you seem to be Danish anyway, why not just take Euros, you'll lose out on any conversions you make along the way, there's no point to it.*

Conversely, I don't think it's so bad yet that US citizens would fare better by converting into another currency first. It's still a valid and hard currency after all, if not exactly strong.

* (Whoops, I see you guys still have Kroner eh. I dunno, your call; I guess given the choice maybe Euros is the better bet yes, and besides, why invest in a depreciating currency. It may be worth less by the time of your departure.)

Yes, quite, it is like you say. Again, this sub-forum (India For Beginners, the one we're now writing in) was created as (what is thought to be) a handy and easily accessible collection for first-timers to India, without too much white noise that they have to dig through first. So that limitation is to stop it from being filled up by people inadvertently creating threads going "What's a nice restaurant in Timbuctu" etc., which would defeat the purpose, as it would just push away the more relevant threads.

If you feel a thread of yours should be in it, you can always contact a moderator in private to ask them about it. Kindly don't give them a hard time if they decide otherwise Usually threads just get moved here if one of the mods notices something that they feel is handy for it.

Note that threads in the forum can be read and replied to by all, like other threads. They just can't be started by members.

On my first visit, I was armed with USD travellers cheques. ATMs were so ubiquitous that I returned with a couple of USD 100 still not cashed.

On my second visit, I had even found an exchange agency at home that sold enough rupees to last a couple of days. You've got this company, Forex, in Denmark as well, I think.

Cashing the USD cheques during the very first week, credit cards managed the other two plus months as soon as I learned that to "dunk" your card in an ATM meant inserting it and then withdrawing it.

On credit cards and ATM's, I was trying to get some cash in Mamallapuram. My Lonely Planet guide told me that the ATM at the bus square only accepted indigenous cards. The taxi drivers there kindly offered a several km ride to the nearest ATM that would accept foreign cards. Fortunately, I spotted the ATM, and just had a go at it. No problem.
