Hippie tourist hubs
I got a vision oh beaded-haired guys telling me the story of their guitars...Hmmm...no electronic shopping in India then...What about "local" brands? I mean russians have copied Leica and other good brands with great success at the fraction of the original price- but does India have it's own brands you could actually recommend ? |

I haven't bought computers here, but understand that there is little import duty so prices are reasonable.
Luxury imported electronics are expensive. Something like a flat-panel TV here might be had for half the price in UK on a good internet deal. Duty is high and the market is probably not that big yet.

yeah I can understand your frustration..after all you were the proud owner of Indica.. by the India is among an elite group of Nine or Ten countries in the world, which actually can make their own cars..!! In electronics, we do have Indian brands like Videocon, BPL, Onida etc, but nothing special about them..the prices would almost be the same as other international brands.. |

My new Swift is Indian-made, and certainly in a different class altogether. Only thing is the bits they leave out for the Indian market. Like safety features.
I understand the Maruti-Suzuki factory that makes this new, advanced (Fiat designed?) diesel engine will be exporting them too, so your next European car may be rated in bullock-power instead of horse-power! So much in India is built down to a price. I guess Indian culture is rooted in poverty, even for the rich. The don't-waste-anything attitude is something the west can learn a lot from. But it has its own frustrations too: I cannot get carpenters to understand that I can afford for them to throw away that piece of wood with a knot hole in the middle! There is an old saying: to spoil the ship for a half-penny worth of tar. That, I'm afraid, is typical of Indian manufacture: the half-penny gets carefully put in the pocket --- and the ship sinks. "My ship sank". "Yes, Sir; not enough tar sir..." |

Seen a load of these suzuki swifts flying about Goa in February/March all differant colours.......and young men posing with the music blurring......reminded me a bit of the indian peugeot ad. They looked kinda cool though. Arnt they supposed to be bringing out a new small car next year for around 1500.00 GBP. Read some hype about it somewhere. How much is petrol per litre in India at the moment and is there such a thing as insurance and road tax? Sorry i have always used taxis, rickshaws and buses so havent a clue about owning a car. Regards, Remy

cost of Petrol varies from State to State...however you can assume it to in range of Rs.43 - 48 Per litre... Road tax is paid once you buy the vehicle..and premium on insurance has to be paid annually.. |

Insurance for my new Swift is about £190 (GBP). Quite a lot of money. That is comprehensive, however, though I understand you only get two claims a year. Insurance for something much bigger, like a Honda Accord, might be five or six hundred GBP.
Insurance is a tariff market: ie fixed price; different companies may be different on service, but you'll get the same price everywhere. But I just had a nasty dent removed from my rear bumper, by a main service agent, for £25... so no insurance claim for that... |

insurance for car
Insurance for car varies on the type of insurance and what amount you wanna insure your car for. The higher the anount the more the insurance premium. If the car is an old one and if you feel you can get things done in case of an accident you can go for third party insurance which comes to around 1200 INR per year(i am talkin abt a car). But in case of third party insurance they dont pay for the car in case of an accident. If the person who was hit in the accident claims for compensation you dont have to worry abt him as the insurance company will take care of it.
so i feel that is a better option if the market value of the car is less. |

190 GBP is quite a bit isnt it. Janis drives a Renault Clio over here and its about the same p.a. Although i would imagine the accident risk factor would be a lot higher in India. Eventually i would like to spend 6 months of the year in India and im trying to work out if buying a cheap run around would be worth doing or would hiring a vehicle just be as cost effective....assuming when you hire the price includes tax and insurance etc. Regards, Remy Quote:
Petrol over here is 1GBP per litre in many places....very expensive.....but i think your right its a lot cheaper in the USA. Regards, Remy Quote:
Yes if i am to buy a vehicle sometime it will most likely be a cheap run around so third party will do the trick. I always fancied a little battered and bruised jeep type vehicle...does anyone know roughly what one would cost? Regards, Remy Last edited by Nick-H : Jul 17th, 2007 at 17:53. How about food costs? What would a breakfast, lunch and dinner cost dining out? Typical Indian food, veg or non-veg. Nothing fancy, I don't plan on eating at the Oberoi. Just a typical dhaba. How much is a coffee or chai??

Coffee - Rs 5-10 Indian Breakfast at Dhaba - Rs.20-50 Lunch/Dinner - Rs.20-75 A lot will depend on what standard of Dhaba you choose, and veg/non-veg food... Just remember at the same Dhaba people get their fill at Rs.20 as well, when they eat simple Dal and Roti, some pay Rs.50 when they have Dal Fry Butter with Roti and some might pay Rs.100 as well, for Shahi Paneer and butter Naans.. and the best part is all of them are really good options..![]() |
