I had a full, (and I mean full), medical check-up last year at Manipal Hospital in Goa. Cost 3000 Rps.

Our daughter fell over and broke 2 front top teeth recently - five visits and 5 hours at the dentist to cap them. Cost 2200 Rps.

I just read this for the first time... is Doxy really about 40 rupees per 10 pills? And is it readily available in Delhi? I just got a prescription for four months worth of Doxy here in the US, and it's about 35 rupees per pill. If I can get it easily in Delhi, I think I'll wait.

Doxy is readily available in Delhi without prescription. Buy it when you get there, it really does not make any sense to bring meds from home unless they are unavailable in India.

Eyeglasses

Good computerized eye exam: 50 rupees
Good Quality Eyeglass frames: 1200 rupees
Good Quality Glass for the frames: 1200 rupees
Western name brand eyeglass frames: 3000+

My neighbor told me I went to the expensive shop, and that I should have been able to get the glasses for 800 rupees total. On the other hand, my last pair of glasses in the US cost about $450.

a decent pair of glass can be bought between Rs.200 to 600. U can find cheaper stuff as well (bad quality) and go as high as u want...

Got a Taxi (Ambassador - Air Conditioned). 4 days, 4 Pax, from KanyaKumari - Trivandrum - Varkala - Allepey - Periyar and back to varkala. Rs.1500 per day.

Hi charlotte,

May I just ask about where you rent? Are there many places available?

I need to rent in Goa for 6 months from November (maybe December) of this year! It will just be me though. A 1 bed will suffice. However, 2 beds will be good as when people come over for holiday they can stay with me.

Do you have details for landlords etc?

Many thanks

Electronic prices?

Thanks for great pricelists Could someone give guideline on electronic prices ? I'm especially interested in IPods and digital cameras (Canon EOS 300/400 or similar Nikons). What about guitars?

Elviira,

Most electronics I've seen - computers, ipods, cameras, etc., are selling for the exact same price as they sell for in the US. They are usually the exact same models as well - imported from the US or Japan or SE Asia or wherever they manufacture the stuff now. For example - my computer I bought last summer from Dell for around $900. A similar (newer model - mine went out of print) Dell is now selling for rs. 38000. I didn't check the model number, but a friend here recently bought a Canon SLR for about rs 30000 ($750), which is about what they're selling for back home these days. I have a 2 yr old 60 gb video ipod that someone gave me as a gift. I believe the price at the time was between $350-$400. My friend here is looking at buying a similar one for rs. 22000 (actually - quite a bit more than I paid for mine at today's exchange rate - rs 40/$). Indian electronic prices are pretty much the same or slightly higher than prices anywhere else in the world. And be careful, because some of them here don't come with the manufacturers guarantee or a "legit" copy of the operating software.

I haven't seen any guitars for sale in Kerala that I'd want to play. Maybe you'd have better luck in the metros or in hippie tourist hubs...
