In my last visit to India in February I used about 150 Norwegian kroner per day, and didn't need to worry about what's my budget that time. Had a lot of food and beer I was staying mostly in Fort Kochi and Varkala in Kerala. I had a good enough hotel with bath and private balcony. With your budget you can get some more western type accommodation, otherwise it may be difficult to get rid of money - when we are not speaking about more expensive areas of India... Goa may be expensive nowadays, haven't been there for a while.

Regarding bank cards my opinion is that it's always better to have two cards with you. My credit card stopped working in Helsinki where I took my Finnair flight to Mumbai, but the card luckily reincarnetated when I arrived to India. I got it changed to a new one when I came back, the chip was broken. I had also a second card with not so much money on account, and no bank security numbers with me to transfer. I'll be wiser next time!

Hi guys,
You seem most knowledgable about roaming on the cheap. I've been trawling the net trying to find hostels in the 100-300rps price range but not having much luck. Is it best to find them when you arrive in the city itself or have it booked before you arrive? Or have any sights where I can find them? Cheers

Yes. Never tried to book ahead , apart from Delhi. Never had any real problems.

I don't know about credit cards, but with a debit card at least when it's bust it is indeed bust. You can't get advancements on it or anything. So apart from an extra card, it's always handy to carry some cash or traveler's cheques for back-up.

Esp. in that lowest bracket, many places just won't be online. You can normally just rock up and see what you find. Takes some flexibility of course. Station areas are normally and naturally good places to start hunting down accommodation (can be noisy if close to the tracks/bus station though, and perhaps slightly seedy in some places).

See some earlier notes of mine on common procedures when asking around on the fly: Where to stay in Paharganj... Note that focuses on the haggling aspect, which personally I rarely do over a room. I meant it here as an illustration of how to find something in your bracket though; as noted there, even competing hotel staff will normally be happy to point you on.

You should be aware that dark, durable mehndis might contain substances that provoke lasting allergies and serious skin problems.

Thumbs down Okay... i know this isn't really related,

But howcome I can't post any new threads, I have a lot of questions to ask and no threads to ask them in. I've already activated my account, yet it says either I haven't or I don't have the necessary priviledges to post? So..... whats the point? I'm very confused, and frustrated! ARGH

You're probably trying to post it in the same (sub-) forum that this thread is in, so the India For Beginners one.

It is one of very few sub-forums that doesn't allow for members to start new threads; in this case, because it is meant to collect threads that are thought to be of help to newbies to India, without too much interference by spurious other threads being started. It may be easy to miss, but in fact it says so on top of that forum: "A collection of threads that every newbie to India must read. Members can reply to ongoing threads in this forum, but cannot create new threads here."

Aside from a few other restricted forums, you should be able to start a thread in most of them. Just have a look at this site's Forums structure (it's under "Forums" at top left of any page, in the red bar there), then find the most relevant one to start your thread in.

In all of this, note multi-posting on this site is neither appreciated nor allowed, so kindly keep it to just one query in whatever most relevant spot you can find.
