A 20 rupees thali is perfectly possible in small roadside eateries/restaurants.
The very popular eatery just outside my college(a busy suburb of kolkata)used to have veg thali(rice - all you want, dal, 2 vegetables) for 15 rupees. fish curry would cost you a 5 rupees extra. I am talking of 2000.

Yes. When you pay more, you usually pay for the ambience.
(old story about Texan who ordered a second steak at a swanky hotel, and told the waiter, 'remember, the ambience- I already paid for with the first steak' )

That is why I could not understand why the beggers wanted more.
Sometimes there seemed no end to it.
I am not a scrootch, and I gave to everyone freely, frequently, when other tourists just looked away.

why should they not want more...?especially when they have happened to come across someone who is willingly handing out..
No offense , but i don't believe in this form of a handout , i have no issues buying books , other merchandise from guys atleast attempting to make a living , but not this way....id rather stick to giving to 1-2 charities ever year who in turn would use that money for the same thing..

Absolutely possible anywhere in India. Most of the Class 'B' restaurants have this price bracket for Thalis (2 rotis, some rice, 2 vegetables, dal and pickle). In the Metros add Rs. 5. Keep doubling the rates with every class you add. (You're after all paying for the ambience).Basic thalis (rice + sambar + 1veg + pickle) sell for Rs. 15 in most of Kerala and Karnataka.
Depends as well on the location. Even in Candolim/Calangute/Baga area you can buy a Samosa for Rs 5 as well, (Calangute market, near bus station) or a Dosa for Rs 25 (Veg Restaurant).

that's not usually the thing to do, because you are not sure that those money actually go to the kid or someone else saw you doing that and used the children to collect your money... better to give them some food I guess..

I was two yo in 1960, you scalliwag.
The off season is incredible
I didn't go to Rave Beach as apparently it's called by the locals, but I went down two beaches, to Benaulim Beach, I just wanted a rest.
There isn't a lot open during off season, no beach huts, just a local general store a post office and a few restuarants on the beach, catering to the occasional tourist. It's still quite busy on weekends, But I don't like crowds of fun seekers.
I had a tomato fish curry, with rice and accouterments for 25 rupees, and the roti were 4 rupees each.
I'm not a drinker, so it's a good cheap meal.
You can get one of the motorbike taxis into town and back for twenty or thirty rupees.
I didn't think of haggling, business is slow enough, and my room was 150 per night.(Jacinta Moreas guest house.)Again, I could have got them down to 60 or 70 rupees, But why haggle?. The difference between $1.50 australian, and $4 Australian isn't huge. I was the only one in the whole place.
I even sat with the family watching TV one night.
I only saw about ten other western tourists scattered around town
There was a really good ice cream parlour in the main road, who sold good local coffee.
I could get a shot of coffee on top of my ice cream for 15 rupees. It was called a Goan Rocket.
One guy tried to sell me some crap, and the others just told him to stop.!!!!!!!
I befriended one of the shopkeepers who decided not to open the shop for a month, and we just walked around and chatted about Islam and the Portugese and stuff. Shooting the breeze.
The word for Goa in my opinion would have to be Languid.
But I've never been one for getting bladdered and loud.
If I want to write myself off on alcohol, I can do that in Australia.
To me, it just doesn't seem very "INDIAN".
