India a price guide!!

In answer to the many questions about the cost of a trip around India here's a wee price list I put together this trip. The articles show a range of prices this try to take into account regional differences/quality differences etc in price.
This list is by no means comprehesive you may find things cheaper you may find them more expensive on a trip around India but as general rule of thumb you won't go far wrong, with these prices.

I have moved this thread to the packing tips since I have changed that to include questions about costs.

Also I will give it a 'sticky' so it stays at the top since it's a common question.

Thanks for the post Cyberhippie.

once you start converting the prices to $ or pounds, it should put a smile on your face.

Shimla, they do and all these condoms (Nirodh) lands up in cheap brothels and with street pimps and prostitutes on the interstate highways.
In a way its better than govt. employees trying to sell it to chemists.
Atleast this way there is a protection in use

Beatle nut pack? A bunch of Lennon fans? Or the Bootleg Beatles?

Guess you meant a Betel Nut sachet.

regarding condom....the silk weavers have found an innovative use.

Weavers in India were using condoms to speed up the process of weaving silk saris: “It is the fine quality lubricant on the condom,” said one weaver, “that does the wonder trick of speeding up the spin of the bobbin while preventing frequent snapping of the yarn.”

that's why sometimes saree shops smell chocolate

appariently there are other uses too!

http://sify.com/news/offbeat/fullstory.php?id=13706294

Invigilators at Jai Narain Degree College were baffled to find eight condoms hidden inside the underpants of a boy taking BA-II examination in Jai Narain Degree College.

Inside the condoms, chits with short answers, tips and formulae were neatly packed.

This is a reply I sent privately to some one who asked the price of food stuffs etc. for our winter stay in Goa. I thought I would post it here incase anyone is interested.

We go to the beach most days and eat a snack in the shack or go into the local town and eat there. In the evening we eat mostly at home, probably eat out in the evening once a week or cook for friends, then go out to a bar for a couple of drinks. We stay for about 5 months and will take a few organised day or 2 day trips. Over the 5 months we spend about 127.000 rupees in Goa on personal spending - food, socialising, clothes, medical things including new spectacles and visiting the dentist (the age thing!!).

Our rent is 10,000 rps per month for a 1 bedroom flat with living room, kitchen and bathroom with satellite tv and a washing machine (which is a rare commodity in apartments in Goa) We have also paid this price for a bed/sitting-room with kitchen & bathroom so prices vary from place to place, depending what the owners want to charge or you are willing to pay.
We pay a long term rent of 80 rps per day for a motor scooter.
I will give you the price of some of the staple produce so you can see how much food costs.
Water costs about 13 rps for a ltr bottle but the larger bottle you buy the cheaper it becomes. We have the Bisleri man deliver ours in 20 ltr bottles which cost about 3rps a ltr

FOOD RPS WEIGHT
EGGS 20 FOR 12
SUGAR 20 KG
