A new article entry has been added:

How to get reasonable Taxi and Auto Rickshaw fares in India

Quote:
Travelling by taxi or autorickshaw is an essential part of travel in India. It can also be one of the most harrowing experiences, particularly if you are trying to understand how much you should pay when either negotiating a fare or faced with a meter that appears to be incorrect. This article gives you tips on booking taxis and auto's while traveling around India.

small correction: night time charges in most places start applying earlier, technically at 2300, in practice at 2230 or even 2200.

Also, for autos, i have found that a lot of the times the quoted fare is double the meter. so if you dont know how many kilometers your destination is, half it, knock off another 10-20 rupees(depending on the quote) and use that as the base point for your negotiation.

Most definitely. If you start compiling it, we can add it to a separate Community article, which I will link to this article.

Are those prices (per km) still accurate?, the price of petrol is having planned monthly increases, not sure about CNG, but increased petrol prices usually has a knock on effect.

It may be worth adding: -

There are some places, normally touristy places, or places with limited transport options, where the taxi/auto drivers charge ridiculous prices, and just can't be bargained down, and you get the same price from every driver, this can be because all the drivers have agreed to charge a minimum price, or because the owner of all the autos/taxis demands his drivers charge these high prices, it's frustrating, but sometimes you just have to pay the fare, it's always worth having an idea of other transport options just in case, many many parts of Goa can be like this, Rs50 just to look at the auto, but closer to Rs100 if you actually want to get in, and it really can feel like they think of a price, then add Rs100, do learn about the buses in Goa, they're plentiful and very often go to wherever you want to go.

Always try to ask a local how much a taxi/auto should be before asking the driver, but do expect to pay a little more, and remember, an extra 20-30% is normally less than half a dollar/euro/pound, don't let it spoil your day.

So this is an article titled "How to get reasonable taxi and autorickshaw fares" but it does not actually reveal how one gets reasonable fares.

As noted in the article, drivers will refuse to use their meters. I came here thinking a magical solution had been found. Why the misleading title?

Sorry, but there are no magical solutions in India.

However, as the article notes: "If you cannot agree on a price, then get out and look for the next vehicle to go past."

@Nadreg, i am assuming i can post the cab numbers into this thread ?

For Hyderabad, here are the cab company numbers...

City Cab - 040 - 2776 0000, 6620 6620
dot cabs - 2424 2424
easy cabs - 4343 4343
fastrack - 040 2888 9999
green cabs - 2460 6060
meru cabs - 4422 4422
orange cabs - 040-6631 5555
sky cabs - 4949 4949
yellow cabs - 4848 4848

Most cabs may not be metered, but there is a basic fare for a initial distance ( say Rs 200 for first 10 Km), and then a per km. rate. Please inquire when you call initially.

if you want bigger vehicles like toyota vans, inform before. most of the cab companies have those vans.

Yes, you can do that. I'll start a separate FAQ once we get a few more cities listed here.

As much as possible, try and avoid taking autos/tuktuks. No matter what kind of meter is fitted, it is very likely that it has been tampered with, and add to that, the attitude of the drivers leaves much to be desired.

Today, i learnt that the meters have been tampered in such a way that when the driver switches on either the left or right indicators, the meter goes faster. So, instead of 100% cheating, it is only 40% cheating.

Well, ideally, you should negotiate a reasonable amount and settle on that. if you're in an unfamiliar city, it leaves you free to take in the sights as you go, and not worry about whether the driver is taking a longer way, or if the meter has been tampered with or not.

and adam, same trick is also done with the horn.

although, i think that some of the newer meters, with GPS, are not that easy to tamper with. These are starting to replace the simple electronic ones in Delhi.
