This works anywhere in India. Only throw in some air of arrogance, do not look at the traffic, instead look straight and walk with your hand stretched out and palm signalling STOP as if the vehicles are trespassing your private property. Works like magic.
I have seen it, but never dared to try myself. OTOH, if traffic is fairly halted, touching an auto while crossing in front of it seems to be pretty much safe. Age having had its effects on my speed and reaction time, I prefer the crowd joining method.

Traffic in Chennai never stops for pedestrians, until it is forced to do so

--- by an encroaching mass of pedestrians that eventually take over

--- by a policeman

--- by traffic signals if it is daylight and there is a possibility traffic police may be around

a stiff upper lip is preferable to a stiff back

Should not laugh at the incident, the gentleman could have been very badly hurt.

"Crossing the road strikes me as another example of "it shouldn't work, you can't explain how it works, but somehow it just does" "

Certainly explains how most of the traffic works too! ;-)

If you think you can cross at a zebra crossing safely, think again, you are likely to end up as a part of the crossing ! Even when the light at a crossing is green it is better to be alert and look at either side before crossing or better not to cross at all !
