zen and traffic:
1. search for the road.
2. find the (foot)path 3.The first glimpse(of the road) 4.Cross the road 5.TAME the road 6.run like a bird arms outstretched on the road(in mastery of your ability to cross the road) 7.TRANSCEND the road...It's but a pathway to something bigger. 8. get over yourself..you're only crossing an effing road , not reinventing the karmic wheel. 9 Cross back. 10 be at peace watching the teeming multitudes tryingto cross the road. you are one of them...all of them...yet, So...not. inspiration from: Searching for a bulll |

Ah! Just viualize it! A group of estatic road crossers flying across with their arms outstretched, expressions of bliss on their faces, radiating joy. We have mastered the road! Would that not give those rickshah wallahs a pause.

I'm from Chicago... and I promise you that crossing the road in India is on a whole different level. Pay close attention to the advice in this thread, the OP isn't joking! And pay close attention when you cross the Indian road in both directions! p.s. and don't dilly dally on the shoulder of the road either ![]() |

The problem is half solved anyway because, as a pedestrian, you are already pushed half way across the road to start with... (in this link you'll notice the editor messed up my first sentence).

I used to wonder a lot about what the "foreign" tourists find interesting about our traffic (bcoz to me it was perfectly normal). But right now I know what it must be for them. I am currently visiting a northern state of USA, and the traffic is un-believable. 1. No one blows a horn 2. Everyone follows the lane religiously 3. No one drives fast within the city limits 4. They don't try to kill a pedestrian. and believe me, I laughed the first time, a car slowed to let me cross the road. But sometimes the trafiic rules feel insensible..(to start with people driving on the "wrong" side of the road)... and having to wait till the light turns green....(need more patience) |

And if all else fails, wait till the traffic is all jammed up and run across their bonnets or climb through the auto rickshaws, open car doors and slide across seats. Just be polite and smile with a head wobble, after all would they hesitate to run you over or get in your way ~ no! So whose road is it, reclaim the space, reclaim your right for free passage, do you look out for bugs when you walk on the grass, so walk like a giant, cars are bugs.

Actually, I've been to both Montreal and India. Bigger cars in Montreal, traveling faster, maybe not quite so many, but it's still pedestrian beware. It's safer to cross on the red lights because you can at least see what's coming at you. Those people making right hand turns are killer. |

strange how i missed so interesting a thread!
crossing indian roads is an art that only indians have mastered. the most important one is - that old fashioned system of 'look to your left, then to your right and then to your left again' is not valid any longer. if you desire film ishtyle crossings, ensure to totter in front of the nearest car, get knocked down and onlookers will take you across. the traffic will part like the proverbial river. how's that for variety?

But what if they take you back to the same side you just left?
