.............. A lot of the smaller hotels in India do not respond to e-mails ,also , if you succeed in making a booking and somebody arrives before you with money in hand ,that's your booking gone ! My general rule is when first arriving in the country ,probably jet lagged and tired it's very nice to have someone waiting for you to whisk you of to your hotel .Book that first night or two online with an airport pick up ,a lot of hotels in the big cities offer this service .India is not short on small business hotels so once out of the big metros you can rely on guide books or the name of hotels or areas you might have been told about on rout .It is possible then to phone ahead to a hotel a day or to before arriving and make a booking ,or the method i prefer is just turn up ,there is no shortage!!!once again using guidebook for hotel names /areas .you can enlist the help of a rickshaw /taxi to cart you around and look at a few .I have usually found that the first one i view will do ,if you don't like it you can move next door in the morning (no shortage) .
Have fun & happy travelling
P.s Try to arrange it to arrive in town when it is still light ie afternoon ,can make life a lot nicer ..

Hey DBoyle,

Like you, I am going to be 1st-timer to India. I will start my own thread shortly but wanted to wish you well on your travels. I propose being in India probably about Dec., 2009 and want/want to make it around the sub-continent, including Rajasthan-Delhi-Varanasi-to eastern states- Kolkota-south to Chennai-Kerala-Goa (where I am from)-Mumbai. I will be following your thread for advice. I am only in planning stages, have yet to get visa and ticket.

Hi, I'm going to india next month and I arrive at mumbai quite late at night. What's the bet way to get from the airport to mumbai without being ripped off? Also, I haven't got any accommodation booked yet. Is it possible to sleep in the airport for the night?

Thanks, james
