LOL yeah they said they'd installed a new geyser in the bathroom... and i always want to laugh when i'm told to turn on the geyser 15 mins before. When I told Mum to pronounce it as "guyser", she replied, "When in India, you must do as Indians do", with a disapproving waggle of her index finger.

That reprimand ends most of my arguments with her :P

oh, and Nick, I checked the Webster dictionary and it confirmed that while the popular pron is "guyser", Brits pronounce it as "geezer".

I never knew that the rest of the world (apart from India) pronounced "geyser" wrongly. I'm with Nick and Shashank in the "geezer" corner (see avatar ). The rest of you lot are just... weird.

However you pronounce your water heaters, I'll always be in the Geezer corner!

Websters? Pah!
Of course an American dictionary is going to use American pronunciation.
Look up a real English dictionary, namely, the OED.

Geezer is correct. Let's remember the language is called English and not American. Therefore the American is a variant, not the English. (Hint: One can only vary from the original, and considering the language is called English, it's the original).

It's true that the Antipodeans use a few American pronunciations, guyzer apparently being one of em (didn't know that). Another one I've heard in Oz is "route" American-style, rather than orig English-style (root). If u want to give an Aussie a routing order in orig pronunciation, they go belly-up laughing - thinking u want to give them a rooting order (Antipodeans will know what I mean ).

Antipodeans (some) also say ann-suh for answer (aan-suh). We can hardly be expected to believe therefore, that that's the original and not the variant.

Our geysers don't spout.
And yours go up in steam, not smoke.

LoL here! Liked your post Captain! This Antipodean used to say guy-ser but now it's geezer (as in Rome...) but always said aans-er and root for 'route'!
