Well, fellows, at least I now know what Mallu is - but the funny thing is I just rechecked the whole thread now thinking I must have missed something and I can't find the previous stuff with the word Mallu apart from Post 69. Maybe my skimming is inaccurate.. or is it in another thread?????? So,apologies Nick if you did post it, and I am not reading all posts correctly!!

It's very simple: Nick posted it on another thread where the question came up.
And so no, everything's fine, we are not getting old, our brain cells are in perfect working order, and as the book says: Don't panic!

Ahhh... ok. I thought it had gone missing.

As for not panicking: a light-hearted book on sailing I once read advised, in an emergency, that as much panic as possible was strongly advised. It suggest that use of any of the International Distress Signals, by apparently calm and collected people, was most likely to be ignored, and that it was very necessary to add jumping and screaming and tearing out of hair to emphasise that one really is in trouble!

I tried to put those little sidewise men laughing at this time but d...n GPRS too slow! LOL at myself here!! And I do like your
reassurances Machadinha!! Won't book myself into Agra Pagal Hospital as they are constantly referring it to people here with 'mind problems'! You see, you are right - too much addiction to IM (YogaGal's pass time thread "Which film, famous person" one) is addling my brain! Loved your nautical emergency reference, Nick! |

I think they didn't understand you, is your hotel reserved?? Did they understand your dates? 'What' sounds very rude but it isn't because it is commonly used in Hindi, Kya? and not considered rude at all.

LOL, LonelyAlex! I am terribly lazy, rather than struggling with the phone and my Hindi which probably sounds like an Indian's bad English, I get Mr K or one of my nephews to make the phone calls most times! I have managed to get myself understood when Star World is not adjusted properly by the cable people however with some timely well-worn phrases in Hindi - such as (English translation) 'sound down', picture crappy etc.

an american friend once took offence at my simplifying my english when speaking to a staff member. my take on language is it's a form of communication - what would be the use of using english that wasn't understood, or worse, misunderstood? so there's a lot of 'are you going?' when it should be 'have you been?'. etc. best part is it gets the job done. i find my accent switching from 'propah' english to german/italian-sounding english to a very indian-english depending on who i'm conversing with. it's all fun, something to be enjoyed. ![]() |
