How do you define Indian Accent ? American accent is being picked by people, but mind you that is a very minuscule percentage of overall English speakers..and they use American accent when they are working in the industry...after they change the industry and accent gets dropped in coupe of months..
Normally as well they get a lot of ridicule if they talk in American accent from their family and friends from 'outside' the industry.. |

Indian Accent is indefinable, Shashank, and depends on where the person is from, where educated etc. but it is spotted by an outsider very quickly! I have to say i like Jennifer's beautiful English voice on NDTV and the lady from Bangalore (name begins with an 'M' Myra, Maura???) speaking rather than a pseudo-American accent. And actually Shashank many Indians with good English speaking just don't have much of an accent at all! Indians in New Zealand, born in NZ, sound like NZ'ers!(Awful vowels and not very nice spoken English voice)
Interesting history asides here btw. Am enjoying reading these titbits!

Shashank is right. Rarely are people able to "Neutralize" their accents completely. I have lived here for 30 years and work in 99% mainland American environment (as compared with Hawaii environment). I have not been able to shed my Indian accent completely in 30 years! People still do double takes when they hear me first time. May be I am a sloooow learner

I was talking my friend from Goa and could easily understand him but when I was there I had to ask him to repeat things...whats that all about, maybe there were to many distractions.

I'm a Kiwi too, Daydream Believer and without bias! It's true, broad NZ and even Australian vowels are not good!! I will stand by my statement! And I'm sure yours are being beautifully refined by living in London, listening to London English??

I've been away for 10 years, 1 in Asia, and 9 in London. It's the subject of much amusement to all who know me that I sound exactly the same as I did the day I left. In fact my Dad still can't tell the difference between me & my sister (who never left) on the phone.
I don't have the 'broad' accent you're talking about though - never did. (P.S Much more ok for a Kiwi to take the piss out of Kiwis!) |
