It's a kurta, Cayle - same word as for the man's garment! And yes, good comments dzibead, grikoo etc. Wear what you would normally wear in an office - I've seen in Delhi women in smart western clothing, kurta and smart pant, salwar kameez... all of these and all are appropriate in business situations.

Hi Platys

The above dress would be okay no problems. wait a little longer to buy SKs. maybe after you have seen your collouges wear it

Thanks! My first set of pants came in the mail, and are being hemmed now. They are a cotton/linen blend, and should be fine for the heat. I'm worried that they are a little casual (they have a pocket on the side leg - like cargo pants), but I have a few more pairs coming.

It doesn't help that here in the US, I can wear wahtever I like to work. We're super casual. So I wear skirts that hit the knee a lot in the summer, and jeans in the winter. I had some old slacks from my last business casual job, but they were all too heavy for summer.

I'm not too worried about attracting attention - I just want to make a good impression on my employers. I'd hate to start out on the wrong foot from the get go.

Isn't the nature of the business an important factor in determining dress code as well? If you're a doctor or lawyer and/or potential investor in some major joint venture - then you really should dress the part no matter what part of the world you are in.

In our company's business dealings in India we were dealing with older Hindus(in their 60's/70's), government ministers and those that tie closely to them. They didn't really want to see some young lady in bobby socks and blue jeans or even a fun SK. They wanted to be dictated to and convinced that we were the experts & professionals they were searching for .... so,as a result, suit & tie for men and western ladies business attire was/is a must.

But I think today we are talking mostly about call centers, software development etc and with it a younger generation of management and a more casual/wider dress acceptance - overall.

Happily, my contact in India sent me a long email about what to expect, and included a mention of dress code as well. He said shirts and slacks Monday - Thursday, and jeans on Friday.

Don't tell me the dreaded casual Friday has reached India! Oh the sight of accountants and bankers and lawyers trying to look 'relaxed and casual' in pressed chinos or jeans with creases ironed in! and golf shirts - or worst of all polo shirts with their company logo on which were distributed at some ghastly team building event or weekend. Anyone with any 'different' style is forbidden to wear their casual clothing of choice of course! Imagine turning up in boardshorts, t-shirt and thongs, or full goth or heavy metal regalia.. now that I would LOVE to see!!!!!!! (Sorry - I just find it hilarious, but I thought it was only an Australian thing.)

Casual Friday is totally an US thing as well. In the US office, we wear jeans pretty much every day.

Oh, and in the same email, he was talking about what I should eat, what I should avoid, and he says that they usually order a vegetable sandwich in for foreign visitors. However, I should not eat the sandwich under any circumstances, and instead I should ask for something hot.

It's been cracking me up all day

A vegetable sandwich sounds dodgy in any country - let alone India, I probably wouldn't eat it either... So that will be a good look for you on day one - rejecting the food and demanding something else to eat!

So if you wear jeans every day, what do you wear on casual Friday?

Pajamas.

Well, in my office, we're casual every day. So we don't have casual fridays. In my last work place, it was business casual every day, except for certain fridays. For those fridays, you had to donate money to a cause, which would earn you the right to wear jeans that day.

My uneducated opinion: Stay natural, stay true to yourself, but change that high-maintenance hair-style, because high-maintenance sounds like a lot of work...
