Wherever you are staying aquamoon, the folks there can help you find a good tailor. January is our winter (not cold though in Rajasthan) and is perfect for jeans and t-shirts. You will find many travellers in this attire and it is perfectly acceptable. Also many of the young Indian girls are wearing this combination. You will be fine wearing this or your sk's and no one is going to stare at your clothes.

I land in Delhi in the afternoon, but going to Agra right away, then off the Jaipur the next day, arriving late in the evening, I expect, so first available shopping stop should be Pushkar. Then Jaipur, then home...

If you're stopping a while in Jaipur ( a couple of days) when you first come, there is a terrific choice of sk's readymade or materials to make up. Pushkar will also have some too.

Thank you all for your responses...

Wear what you feel comfortable and confident in. I don't believe or even hazard to guess that a gora woman is more of a target or appears any more subservient to potential harassers in flowery tradional dress then they do in more somber western dress - or not .... but what I do know is that Indians are acutely aware of the level of confidence portrayed in one's body language(a subcontinent sixth sense). So feeling at ease & comfort with whatever your dress selection may be the 1-2(win-place) criteria in dress selection.

Chennai/South-India perspective: It covers the curves.

The skin would just about never be on show.

Few things are 100% true. I noticed a lady with a lowish-cut top in a shop the other day --- she adjusted her dupatta very quickly when she noticed me noticing. The dupatta worn around the neck and hanging down the back very nicely and gracefuly accentuates a woman's figure. A sari can be draped to disguise the figure, or to show it off; can be quite revealing --- but of shape, never of skin!

Look... I'm a specialist at this stuff: it's called 'being a man'!

It's less the hair than the attitude

I'm a foreigner who travels in India frequently, and it's true that you "stand out," but if you wear salwar kamiz, you'll be surprised how much less visible you are.

Hair color isn't so much a problem as clothing and attitude. If you behave in a "demure but no-nonsense" way out on the street, and dress appropriately (i.e., modestly but comfortably) you can reduce unwanted annoyances to an enormous extent.

Anyway, if some guy bothers you, just snap, "Batimizi! Mat karo!" He'll get the message.

It should be one sentence, 'badtamizi mat karo!' which means 'don't misbehave!'

badtamizi is misbehaviour.

In half the country outside the hindi speaking belt, they won't understand what you are saying, though .. badtamizi is urdu

Ah, thank you Captain for elucidation! We never hear this one out our way, although there is a mixture of Urdu speaking folks with a language mixing Urdu, Hindi, Marwari etc. Have heard some other very choice words, Hindi mostly, but won't mention them here!
