I travelled South India 12 years back - then settled here for 8 years. So not a continuous 12 years! Have not been back to NZ or Oz many times in the 8 years and when I've gone it's only been for about 5-6 weeks in the hot time. When I go back in April it will be 3 years since last having been there so am much looking forward to this - hoping to get PIO card... I don't think you sound like a newbie Nick btw!
Just now thinking - I never did the Introduce Yourself thread, so maybe this can be a substitute!!!

well may I be the first to re-welcome you to IM. Lots of experienced folk here (if nicks a newbie then I'm a twinkle)! Might I suggest that when you go back to NZ in April you pack lots of warm clothing, a raincoat, and heavy boots - cause its going to be freezing, wet, and really windy!

happy travels

I'm sure this has cropped up way before in this thread but do not have the hours to read through all this so i apologise now for my laziness and hope someone won't mind going over a few things for me.

i am a 22 year old white girl travelling alone and fly out to delhi on 17th january. i haven't bought a salwar kameez in the UK as i thought i might as well get the real thing once i get to india, can anyone give me any advice on where to go for a nice but cheap (got to bear in mind the budget) salwar kameez in delhi.

i'm going to be wearing walking trousers and t shirts when i first get in will this be ok? nothing is tight or revealing.

thanks

Click search at the top right of the screen. You won't need hours to read, you should find the information you need quite quickly.

It is one of the most covered subjects on the site, and, hey, please don't ask us to repeat it all for you!

But, in a word, yes --- you'll be fine.

You don't need to get any salwar kameez outfits at all, unless you want to, as what you say you'll be wearing when you arrive is just fine. I can't offer any particular advice on where to buy, other than to try FabIndia (numerous locations in Delhi). I'm sure you can find cheaper places but everyday clothing in general is very affordable for Westerners, even those on a "budget" (I'm not talking about elegant evening wear - that can get very expensive). I like FabIndia's quality and the fact that they have lots of cotton fabrics. If you have the time, you can buy fabric and have outfits tailored for you - again it's very cheap. You can buy SK "sets" of fabric, with matching pieces, often with designs around where the neck or hem of the kameez will be, that are intended to be cut and tailored for you.

As noted, no problem at all, I should think. And yes, it's been covered before on this thread (and many others), so you might want to scroll around it all the same

The only pic involving personal friends I ever put up here: http://www.indiamike.com/photopost/s...19/ppuser/5654 . That woman got around just fine for months like that, and she was probably a few years older than you.

You will definately find SK's both as cheap as you need or as expensive, but I will tell you that for your first suit, so you already have one to wear when you arrive, head to Southall in England! I got two of my most favorite suits (satin) for $10 pounds! Sewing I waited till I got home (they wanted $20 to sew them! NO WAY cheaper at home) but if you know someone who sews, the fabric is the same, designs are the same as in India. Just a hair more expensive (MUCH more expensive if you go 'butique' sp)) But if you can, just get the one even sewn in Southall and then you're set! After being in India, it's about as close as the western world gets to actually being there!

Thanks for welcome, BB!! Will certainly pack the winter woollies.
Back to topic - don't want to skew the thread, (I put that remark in as a joke)- Vixi S - if you want 'modern' forms of sk go to Khan Market where there is both FabIndia and Anokhi. Both shops have good quality kurtas, and matching pants. All can be bought separately so you can mix and match. For more traditional, Karol Bagh, has many shops - you can catch the Metro easily there. Also a couple of Department stores, Salasar's and Westside, where modern versions are also.
Re Machadinha's picure - this dress is perfectly acceptable, so if you didn't want to get sk just wear your jeans, pants and loose T-shirt. Many travellers do this and no one blinks an eye. My friends wore loose cotton blouses with jeans in Feb. - no problems anywhere. Nice pic btw, Machadinha.

No, Shashank, it's not diverted to the SK discussion. The SK discussion is the perennial main topic. It's the other things that are the diversions.

You're missing something!

vixi... I'm sure Leeds has Indian shopping areas to, and in London one can add Wembley, Green St (Upton Park), East Ham, and many others --- but there really is no problem with Western dress, only with Romford Teenager Out To Pull dress!!!

In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if, after a couple of days there, you aren't wondering what all the fuss was about!
