In India, if you are a female, you go to the women's beauty saloon. Even if bald
But I do love a good head massage...?

Umm, not an expert on beauty saloons, but maybe you will get it there?

Or at the numerous 'ayurvedic massage' places in cities.. do look for a recommended one.

Or a 'spa'- those taking off in big cities too.

A female walking into a barbers shop in India asking for a head massage will, err, create waves

I have to agree with Captain Mahajan, the Opoponax. There are plenty of women's beauty salons all over India where you can get your haircut. For the head massage you would get it there as well because many of these combine massage with hairdressing for women. As to prices they vary tremendously depending on where you go - same like in own country. The big cities with flash places will charge more - I went to one in Defence Colony - got a very good haircut for 300 rupees which I thought was exorbitant in comparison to the 50 rupees I pay here. There is also a thread for good haircut place in Delhi on IM.

Kristin - wait till you come here. They have their own rule - you know those sort of Guiness book of Records thing 'How many people can be squeezed into..'(it used to be old fashioned telephone booths)- well, it's now ATM's here. And it's all MEN!
Big cities they have security guards etc. and it doesn't happen but not here. And I have been told this is the Rule for Jaisalmer! I think I posted elsewhere one time how to deal with it - when you reach the outside entrance you park yourself with your arm at the opening side of the door. You allow men inside to come out. You don't allow men behind to pass you. You wait until all men have exited then you slam the door firmly to lock it and take your turn. Smile sweetly and exit say 'Dhanavad' (thank you) as you go. They will accept this behaviour from you!!!!

Out of the shop?

They'd be so embarrassed that this is, actually, a possibility !

There are some modern chains coming now that advertise themselves as 'unisex'. These are all much more expensive than the kind of place Mrs N would go to, so I can't tell you if they segregate inside.

(I just have a mental picture of being next to a woman getting a bikini-line wax, and saying, "Just give me whatever she's having")

Just look for a beauty salon. It'll say, Women and children only.

Hey why do we get stuck with the kids all the time.

My policy: We deliver. You get their hair cut.

I am visualizing it right now Aishah. You getting ur money out while horde of Indian men are waiting outside asking each other what's going on and then somebody replying "memsaib is getting her money".

LOL, Rushie and Prashant! Diana - here the fathers take their little boys to the barber's shop for their haircut and they take great pride in doing so. Mothers are mainly cutting girls' hair at home until they get older and then it is just growing long. It's a real treat watching Dad watching his young son sitting on a little wooden platform in the big chair having the same treatment as Dad!

She may well have spent as much of her adult life here as many of our native-born members. Certainly I'm a complete newcomer by comparison

I thought you'd been here for about 12 years?

That was the basis of my assumption, anyway. It certainly does make me look like a newbie.
