And what a beautiful wife!! Thanks The Opoponax for spelling - I find his eyes mesmerizing.. And because I hardly have time for TV where any movies might be I have never seen him in a movie!

Haha! You mean it's already been done? See, this is what happens when you only see Bollywood movies when you get around to it, and stop actually following them...

Funny, I picture him more as a superman or spiderman type than a batman/zorro hybrid.

After you shampoo, try rinsing your hair with a tablespoon of vinegar in a pint of warm water -- and then rinse that off so you don't smell like a salad. The mile acid in the vinegar will neutralize the alkaline soap that doesn't rinse out in the hard water. I know you don't have to worry about this in New York, but a small plastic bottle of vinegar is easy to travel with and really helps.

And when you run out, a sympathetic cook may give you a free refill ... the cook at Fairlawn in Kolkata filled my bottle with malt vinegar. (You probably will want to avoid the red wine vinegar with garlic flavor).

The only woman I ever saw really hasselled in India was a British girl of Indian descent who was born in the UK, didn't speak and Indian language and dressed like a backpacker , though not very exposed or anything. Every waiter wanted to know what she was doing with the backpackers and did her parents know she was here - I felt sorry for her - and I'm blonde! It matters much more what you wear and what your attitude is not your hair colour!

NO KIDDING! Total denial! This board is more for perpetuating a dreamy Bollywood image of India - and not the real thing. They have tried to losen up a bit which I think they should because people should be able to read both sides of a story; good and bad. In that way they can be better prepared and can make their stay better and more pleasant with less turmoil.

Regarding blonde hair: no matter what haircolor you have, you will be sexually harrassed in India at some point. Period. They will grab your crutch, your breasts, your anything at any given time, be it in trains, buses, when you are in an auto or simply walking somewhere. It wont happen constantly but it will definately happen to you. I am yet to meet even one female from ages 15-40 who has not had this happen to them in India. Do not at any point sit next to a man in movie theatres, or any public transportation for if you do they assume you are inviting sleezy behaviour (and you are foreigner, so naturally you are automatically branded a slut. You may live more like the Virgin Mary while your Indian girlfriends are all over the place and visit abortion clinics, yet you, not them, will always be viewed as the eternal slut).
In India no one will be offended if you politely ask them to please move, and ask that you would like to sit next to a woman or by yourself. They will all understand. Sexual harassment or 'eves teasing' as they call it is extremely common in India and the reason why they have separate compartments for women in most public transportations. Even in movie theatres women don't sit next to men because they men will often start masturbating in the dark if they are next to you. So, just be prepared and avoid the pitfalls. Also, avoid wearing tight clothes, and skimpy clothes. Wear a shawl in rural areas (cities it may not be necessary).
This is the truth. Take it or leave it.

The only women who travel alone and are not harrassed are the grandmothers. Older people (foreigners) actually have greater benefits of being in India than many other travelers, and I always had an impression that they are quite well treated. Indian people are sweet to children and older people.

You have offended many of our native, born, resident, non-dreaming, Indian members on a regular basis with your these-people generalisations.

It is a pity that you cover up the useful pieces of information that you have to offer with your racist rants. But I have no doubt that you are in denial as to how they actually come accross, particularly to Indian people.

You've made it clear that you are glad to be out of India: Please feel free to relieve yourself of the tedious necessity of putting up with us on this board. We'd hate you to be wasting your time in this obviously non-productive way.

Thank you.

The rest of us can now get on with something interesting and enjoyable.

I cannot relate to anything in Mary10's post and I wonder if she has ever been to India? I have never seen any of this offensive behaviour in the many crowded places, including squashed in Metro
at peak hours, that I have been in. All I can say is maybe some instances, Eve-teasing etc. - once read and posted that of young males hanging about the female colleges at Delhi University, but this blatant groping and grasping thing is just non-existent in the areas of India that I move about in.
It is hardly worth commenting because it is so obvious but IM is one forum where the contributions of all its members present a very real picture of India today.

so true -- because India is not strictly the pretty Bollywood dream or the land of yoga, gurus, and incense, or the dangerous third-world country that some people like to believe.

those are extremes and the truth always lies somewhere in the middle.

India is all about travelling, dressing, resting, eating, & socializing in the manner, budget, & comfort that suits you & you only. Other people's experiences can help to approximate what may ease & appease your experience - but their wants, needs, views & agenda for India are often quite different than yours may be and thus the - Indian experience - that strikes us all in quite seperate ways.
