There are a few introduction classes to Hindi on youtube, you just search for Hindi lessons on youtube. There is also a good program on the internet called "a door into Hindi " by Afroz Taj.
If you want to learn more seriously I found that the books and cds by Rupert Snell are very helpful."Beginner's Hindi " and also "teach yourself Hindi Conversation ". Both come with Cds and if you have the necessary self-discipline you can progress well.
Have fun, Paratmoshe

1. I second the recommendation on "Teach yourself hindi".

It's a really great book.

2. If anyone here, who's speaking or learning hindi, wants to talk with me on skype, to help me practice my hindi, that would be great!

thanks

Very Cheap 'Hindi Guru' CD ROM

I did some searching around, and found this ridiculously cheap ($8.95 U.S., with free international shipping) version of the 'Hindi Guru' CD-ROM at the following link:
http://www.matchless-gifts.com/store...D%252dRom.html

I must admit that I am wondering if there is something 'wrong' with this as everywhere else it costs $79.95 or equivalent; is it an older version of the program? Is it a product with a similar name as the more famous program?

Will post with news of what happens

By now you should have it...?
I don't know how good, how valid, that CD is, but I have bought from them and they're good to deal with, they quickly get it shipped to you.

Hi bjp,
Thanks for asking about this.

I didn't forget about posting an update, actually it has been on my mind.

The CD was shipped in early July, so I am hoping that I won't have to wait too much longer for it.

When I get it I will definitely post a bit of a review here and let people know what the overall ordering experience was like.

Learn Hindi on YouTube

Still haven't received my 'Hindi Guru' CD from matchless-gifts.com, and have not had a reply to the email I sent them several days ago. It has been over three weeks now, so I'm getting worried.

I like this series of 'learn Hindi' phrases on youtube
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ansfV...ture=re lated

The only thing I would change is to have the author add a literal translation of the phrase underneath the transliteration. This would allow those of us who want to learn grammar to get a feel for what word is doing what in the sentence, and would also give a feel for the syntax.

Did you not get the email saying it had been shipped?

Yes,..need it all. All resources one can find practical.
The ideal way would be some good grounding with resources like this, together with some weekly classes, and then daily use over some time in India.
Can you get some classes locally where you are? It would be good for speaking practice. There classes here but they're really for children, not really practical for adults together with them, and not really meant for "gringoes" anyway.

Hi bjp,
Yes, there is a confirmation in my account mailbox at matchless-gifts.com from a few weeks ago, and I got an email, too, saying that the CD has been shipped. I have also tried to contact the people at the site on two occasions now, and have not had a response, which I find really annoying.

Re. learning Hindi, yes, I agree, your suggestions about an 'all round' method of learning are good ones. Unfortunately, I am not presently in a position to take classes.

I also find that when I'm learning anything, it is first better for me to try to orientate myself to the subject by investigating written resources.

I am, however, lucky that I have several very good friends who are native Urdu speakers (and who are getting more and more amused the more I 'learn'). So, it's good that I can learn the 'theory' and then try to apply it with my friends. Unfortunately, I don't think that any of them are really conversant (pun, pun) with the grammatical aspects of the language, so I have to do that research myself ahead of time.

Much as I try, I cannot get my head around the way that Rupert Snell teaches, whereas I have found the same concepts explained by others to be crystal clear. I know that this speaks to my very specific learning style, but I would also advize others who are thinking of learning to go and look at various learning materials before purchasing them (I should have stuck with my own instincts in this regard when I went and bought Snell's 'Hindi' book).
