I think, though I'm not sure never having read the book, that his face appears in the Freaks of Goa

India 1982

I've just posted a few of the pictures my Dad took when he visited India on business in 1982 here for those interested:

http://www.indiamike.com/photopost/s...&ppuser =8936

Unfortunately my Dad nearly had a heart attack as my Mum was peeling them out of his photo album so she only managed to select a few. It doesn't look like much has changed in 20 years from these, even the snake charmer looks like the very same one I saw in Cochin 6 months ago, but then maybe all snake charmers look the same??!

My Mum has promised to try to sneak a few more from the album when Dad isn't looking .....

Does anyone remember seeing a crazy guy in McCleod Ganj who had lost it taking acid and ended up getting arrested and sent back to Canada in a straight jacket?

I met a very strange guy wandering around Camp 4, Yosemite National Park, California - he had permanent tremors and kept saying : "hey maaan, anybody got any acid maaan" and when questioned could not remember anything after 1972. Could be the same bloke??

I traveled thru India and Sri Lanka for 6 months in 1972. I don't remember names of hotels, just towns. If your name is Linda, you're blonde and from New Zealand, and travelled thru Pakistan and Amritsar with a Californian, please respond. I remember a pig being roasted on the beach in Goa, Calangute, I think, and someone singing the "theme from Orpheus" with his guitar. I walked naked down the beach to Arjuna (seems rather strange now, but I wasn't the only one). The 3rd class trains were so crowded people were practically sitting on my lap. I travelled with a German guy, Eckehart Eisele, who had a VW van, for month, ashram-hopping, and rented rooms in a house in Goa from a guy from Kentucky. We also got a bit "stoned" in Ooty, where children bowed down to me at the botanical garden, thinking I was a holy man. I sat on an 8 hour boat trip from Alleppey to Quilon for $1. There were pigs eating the garbage off the streets in Jaipur. If you're name is Jean Hendrix and you travelled thru Ceylon with me, please write. You left me in Pondy for 2 months, where I tried to get enlightened. Does anyone remember the ashram in Ganeshpuri near Bombay? If you are from Liverpool and your name is Dave, we travelled thru Burma, Thailand and Laos. I'm returning to India after 33 years. I leave for Chennai Dec 3, for 2 weeks, then to Pondy, Auroville, Ooty, Mysore. It almost brings tears to my eyes.

Finding People

There should be some web site that allows you to give your name, the place, date, etc, etc, so that people could look you up and reminisce. Anybody got any ideas?

You'll still love it.
Just look beyond the changes, especially if you revisit Goa.

Have a great trip.

I'm totally absorbed in your photos. Can't talk now. Must get back to photos. They're incredible. I'm gaining new insight on how to look at things for the trip. Thank you, thank you.

Indiamike has probably the finest source of India photos taken by real travellers that you'll ever see.

Over 7000, WOW! I would go crosseyed if I had to look at all those.

But 2240 ain't bad.

Like I said your probably right. And you are! But it's just another site where you can go to look if you choose. As virtualtourist is not solely pics of India.

It seems like in the 60's and 70's people who went to India weren't very keen on taking photos, it seems quite difficult to find some from that time... Someone told me she would have felt ashamed.. How things have changed, haven"t they?

cameras in the 60s and 70s

My recollection of that time is that living in the moment was primary. Capturing time on film wasn't the thing. I gave my camera away in India (among other things) Ended up with one change of clothes rolled up in a sleeping bag which was wrapped in a ground sheet and tied with a rope that went over my shoulder. Life was simpler then.

Very True,
Many times in Anjuna I've seen freaks take cameras off both Westerners & Indians and take their films out before handing them back ( occasionally not) after those people had taken people pictures,,,,,,

People were paronoid about drugs, visas, being on the run, or of being photographed as a freak. Cameras were a No No,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
