I thought it was funny too. Gita Mehta was it (?)It's been a while since I read it, but I seem to remember a quote about never trusting a baba wearing adidas running shoes !
Oh yeah, the thread- I remember renting Timothy Leary's old bungalow in 1989 (Hepworth, Kims,or whatever it's called now) for 3 months @ 300rs. a month, just me,the view, and the vulture that liked to watch me sunbathe !

India 1971...a life changing experience

I travelled overland from England in 1971. Got rid of the car and most of our stuff in Kabul and carried on by train and bus. Stayed at the Golden temple in Amritsar for 3 weeks for free, helping in the kitchen where 10,000 people a day were fed, again for free. Does that still happen?
From there to McCleod Ganj where we stayed in a house made of newspaper. 10 hippies cooking on a wood fire, bathing in the waterfall. Everyone said you could get pot behind the theatre but every time we went there, there was no one there! Then we realized that was where it grew!
Then Manali for a month. No hotels, a restaurant or 2 and we rented a house in a marajuana field. Daily walks to the hot springs which I now realize was 6km away. An old man and his old wife delivered water to our house every morning...10 gallons carried up a steep hill on their backs for a rupee and a beadie a day!
Now it is 35 years later and I am going back with husband and daughter but I don't want to go back to any of the places I went before cause i don't want the disappointment. Is Manali really a ski resort now? My image of Old Manali is a village with no commerce, just folks living in huts with piles of firewood everywhere. A highlight of my life!

Yes, it does, indeed, at least as far as feeding goes. I guess some aspects of India do never change, for good.
I think we should keep this thread only for those stars who went to India in 60s and 70.
Oops, I just posted

concoran,
What about an Indian who had seen all this happen around him from the 60's. Timothy's bungalow? Rings a series of bells.

Is this you?

Another old negative from the 70s....

I remember seeing this fellow crossing the street in Bombay near Marine Drive. Turban, beads, velvet jacket and pants. Another hippy on the way to Goa?

Is this you 34 years ago? Fess up? What would be the chance of photographing another IM member back then?

Que the theme music from Twilight Zone.

Will anyone else here admit to wearing a gratuitous turban? (Steve B excepted, naturally?)

Binder Dundat! Not exactly the Hippy era but on a $100 bet back in '99, I had to set up office as a snake charmer on Janpath. My mates picked out the "most charming" turban they could find ... made an extra 48 Rps tips in my hours service too! ..... then it all went terribly wrong and Bindi the Boa latched on to me neck like an enraged red-headed step sister!!!! ..... took a cattle prod and a pair of amped up car booster cables to dissuade it of choking me into oblivion No hard feelings though took everyone back to the Imperial Hotel for a few rounds at the whiskey bar
