Les, yes the Rose Garden is still there. Lud D'Souza knew all there was to know about home remedies, she helped a lot of people. Sadly she passed away a couple of years ago, she was about 84.

Hey, Liverpool Les!
So sorry, I don't remember the yellow Bedford Rocket bus in Baga. I spent almost all of my time in Anjuna in '75, '76. You had a bus, so did you know BMT, with the raspy voice? "B" was into booking people onto busses that were going wherever. The Goa to Kabul route was one of his favorites. I think he was like a free lance "booking agent" or something. I didn't have a bus but I rode on a few and it seemed that BMT always had his hand in there somewhere. You triggered a memory, though. I had forgotten that Alejandro carried that whip and someone tried to shoot him. He pissed a lot of people off for some reason. I thought he was great! You mentioned Hollywood. Do you mean Peter? He had very blond, almost white, hair? His hair was short because they had shaved his head in a Turkish prison. If you knew him, did you also know the 2 Turks, Nazif and Bourhon? When I first went to Goa, I rode down from Europe in the same bus with Peter and the Turks and Dale and Dutch Hank and many others. Keep the Peace Paul

I believe BMT is in the San Francisco area now, or at least he was a few years ago.

I was totally impressed after reading all the stories evryone here has shared. I was born in America in 1973, but my dad is from India and he remembers growing up in Lucknow in the late '40s. He has both Hindu and Muslim names, and when he was on the trains during partition, he had to say his name was Jimmy so he wouldn't get lynched. He left India for New York in the 60's and did not return until 35 years later when he took me there for the first time, in 1990. Since then, I've been to India several times, and it really is amazing to see the changes that have happened, even in 18 years. Imagine what my dad must have felt when he returned after all those years!
BTW, It is a blessing to grow older and wiser, so I really hope all of you who have been posting don't think of this forum as the old fogeys' club. Most interesting thing I've read all night. ![]()

I really liked it how I felt I was on another planet first time I was in India, and the magic feeling that comes with the territory of having that sensation, back when there was no Internet, no mobile phones and no coca cola (only thumbs up), then I went again some 7 yrs ago and all thoes things made me feel where all on the same network now... Every time I was some remote place that had no internet I was happy again in a way (but then I missed the continental breakfast and the scene again
)

my first trip to India in 1990 was with a friend from work, she flew out a day before me. The arrangement was that she would meet me at the airport when I flew in the following night.
My flight was really enjoyable as I had met quite a few fellow passengers who were also backpacking. The arrival time was about 3am and I did wonder if my friend would turn up. As feared when I cleared through customs she was nowhere to be seen. Feeling a bit anxious I asked the others on my flight what they were doing, they were a bit preoccupied with excitement as a large group of friends had come to meet them and were not really interested in my little problem. I'm quietly panicking and approach one of the guys in the group of friends and ask him what is the best way to get to Pahar ganj. He told me that it would be quite dangerous me to travel on my own. He looked like a seasoned traveller and knew what he was talking about. He offered to escort me to Pahar ganj and make sure I arrived safely. I was worried, but really didn't know what else to do so I took him up on his offer. He got a rickshaw and we heading towards Pahar ganj. We arrived at a seedy area where he tells me that this is my guest house and I should go and check if my friend is staying there. I go to reception and ask they guy on the desk, he starts looking through paperwork and asks my name and sure enough my name is there and so is my friend. I go to the room where she is staying to check and she answers the door. I go back down to the rickshaw where this guy is still waiting for me and tell him that I found her. I don't know who this guy was and I never met him again on my travels but he was a wonderful soul who helped me in my hour of need. He even payed the rickshaw driver and wouldn't take any money from me. I met alot of amazing travellers on that trip, truly amazing people, who were kind, generous, interesting, funny and very friendly. |

Well...So...Why wasn't your friend there to meet you at the airport? It's great that you met a cool person who helped you out (that's India for ya!) but where was she? You knocked and she just answered the door, like, "Oh! Hi! How ya doin'?"

I arrived in Delhi a couple of days before I expected a friend to arrive from UK, and on the appointed day, went to the airport and waited and waited and waited. Asked a porter and he told me the flight had arrived hours ago and everyone was gone. So I went back to the hotel. A couple of hours later, she turned up there -- we somehow missed each other at the airport.

My friend turned out to be a complete nightmare. That first evening, she was there, with a guy she had met. As you can imagine my emotions were all over the place, I was relieved to see her but also pissed off. To top it all I had to share a small bed with them. I remember going to the bathroom and balling my eyes out thinking what the hell am I doing here.
I didn't see the point in having a go at her because I didn't want to cause bad feelings. To tell you the truth the following day I had forgotton all about it. Although we had plans to travel for a year together, she left India a month later. Another friend of mine flew out a week later and they hated each other on sight. I got really sick three weeks later, which kinda freaked her out. I was running a high temperature and somewhat delirious, when she tells me she she has booked her flight out of India. Due to my illness and their constant bickering, I was really past the point of caring. With the help of a Swiss and a French guy (they both lived in India) I recovered. I went on to have a fantastic time, whilst she went onto the States. I would like to say that she was a good friend. Unfortunately, she just couldn't get on with India. What are you gonna do eh? |

Confused here: WWUSA and her friend is a different story altogether?
I guess missing each other at the airport must happen fairly often. |
