Would You Pass My Water?
Sorry about the old joke
Here's an analysis of my tap water which comes from a bore hole in the garden. I do not drink it. I use it for washing, for washing clothes and utensils ---I suppose everything except cooking and drinking.. I'm curious as to what those with a scientific knowledge have to say... Turbidity 3.0 NTU Colour 13 Hazen [it is yellowish] Totals Disolved Solids 2720 mg/Ltr pH 7.9 Total hardness (asCaCO3) 839.3 mg/ltr Calcium as Ca 153.1 mg/Ltr Magnesium (as Mg) 111.7 mg/Ltr Chlorides (as Cl) 974.7 mg/Ltr Total Alkalinity 541.6 mg/Ltr Total Iron (as Fe) 0.27 mg/Ltr Flouride (as F) 1.1 mg/Ltr Sulphate (as SO4) 181.2 mg/Ltr Nitrate (as NO3) 11.05 mg/Ltr Unfortunately there is no information about living creatures in it.

Yes, you are right, the information I would be interested in would be contamination by coliform bacteria, which would imply contact with domestic sewage/animal manure source etc.

Thanks for the link. It's all so scientific! but at least it gives some indication of what does what.
One day I'll try and get an analysis of the lifeforms done. |

Yep: I can agree with that
![]() Elsewhere it has been said "If you drink that you will die. Within 70 years." As that would take me to 120+ I'm thinking of marketing the stuff ![]() |

I took it to a place in Spencer Plaza that sells purifiers and offers analysis.

Nick-H - How much did it cost to do the analysis?
When we actually make the move to India I'll be doing a fair bit of water analyzing myself. This guy is a really good reference for the do-it-yourselfer. I'll be buying quite a few books from the site. Your water and You |

It was about R220, I think. I took a couple of litres in. The place basically does the Aquaguard stuff. I'm disappointed that they didn't cover the micro-organisms, but I haven't been back since, and with drinking water at R35 for 25Ltr, I've gone off the idea of buying a fancy machine.
If you want further contact details, PM me. Thanks for the link, I'll check it out tomorrow |

Nick is right. Bottled water is less expensive than buying an RO filter in India and using it. Plus, the water is India ruins the RO memberanes in no time and filters waste a lot of water In the old days you could just boil the water and drink it.. Today the contaminents in ground water in India cannot be boiled off.. Knowing our indian comapnies. it might be a good idea to test even bottled water once in a while..

Just a couple of comments....it costs about $20 / $25 (Canadian) to carry out a full private-well-water analysis in Ottawa.... Also, the lab doing the analysis should provide u with normal / acceptable concentrations of contents (MAC = maximum acceptable concentration),.... for example, MAC for fluoride (F) in Canada is 1.5mg/L and....... so on. I believe the lab wpould need about 100ml of water to carry out the tests....maybe 500mls, .....2 L seems too much. Link: http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/hecs-sesc/water/dwgsup.htm

Hello Eater, The lab did give desirable/tolerable levels as well as the results: but I was too lazy to type it!
