yes & no depends on where u are. In south india in villages it may be weird but the women are more in command (usually) so usually one doesn't get into any guy issues. In most of the metros around the country, it's normal.

"Anybody" living alone would be a little unusual. But there are lots of foreign women living alone in Indian towns here and there. You might be an oddity for a short time, but your neighbors will soon acclimatize.

Young women living alone in India tend to draw unwanted attention from males.

Living alone or not, young women do tend to draw unwanted attention from males all over the world, only the degree of attention may vary.

Yes, living alone is considered a freaking thing in India, no matter you are a male or female; again, how freaky you are considered depends upon which part of India do you live in. Btw, nowdays, its not a big issue in metros.

Also many things depend on the length of stay. If staying for more than couple of months then find a place near some foreigners as indian neighbours are nosy (being indian have to admit/say this) so they'll keep an eye on all males visiting you. Not a good feeling when gossip happens for one reason or the other. Don't wanna offend or scare u but aware.

Please advice which city/town you are considering and we can try to qualify the answer accordingly.. Right now the question is more like, "would a woman living alone be regarded as weird in Europe" - the answer would range from a village in Greece to a town in Poland to a Barcelona

As I havenīt been yet I canīt say.. Iīd be looking for a place where I felt comfortable alone so if you can advise in that respect itīs very welcome. Thanks for the post re female singles in Delhi, thatīs useful to know. As Iīve never been to India at all yet I canīt be more specific...
Thanks for all the feedback, I really appreciate it!

Advisable if you first come here on a short trip, see and get used to how things work here(they can be different),what's your objective like(if its ok to ask) cuz that would help you(us) to decide where you want to put up finally. There are parts of India which are as well developed as the west whereas others not so developed or least developed, size wise India is bigger than all of countries of continent Europe put together, so it's v subjective at this stage, honestly your ques itself at this stage is quite open ended. Suggest you do some self analysis, fine tune your requirements and then take a view.

To me, the idea of thinking about living somewhere I've never even been would be ------err, unthinkable!

Each to their own

Well, I wouldnīt just go and live there, Iīd be having a good look and a good think first! But having already emigrated once before, lock stock and barrel, without much actual forward planning of any kind, and ending up in a place in a country I didnīt know in advance that Iīd end up in, Iīm now keener to find things out BEFORE I go to have a look around, so that I know if itīs a good place to look around.. since itīs not cheap or easy to just hop on and off planes to India. If you get my drift..

So Iīm now *considering* emigrating one last, final time, to a place Iīve always felt drawn to as it has a strong spiritual tradition that I find attractive, and southern India has the climate Iīm looking for.. plus some good hospitals (Apollo in Chennai) as I may need medical attention.. and not least, I could afford to live in India without being constantly worried about money.. It would be a mistake if I didnīt find out about those things before even getting a plane to have a look around.

I adored Turkey when I went there, and weirdly enough anything that reminded me of the Eastern influence or just remotely seemed 'Indian' just thrilled me to bits.. I always just knew somehow that India was something special for me.. even when I was 13 I was going to the Indiacraft shop in London on a regular basis.. there is just something about the place for me. I have just got to have a look, and perhaps I will end up there, who knows. Meanwhile Iīm asking all the questions I can in advance of going on a very expensive trip.

When I can find someone to dog and house-sit.. that is my major hurdle. I thought I may as well come anytime, never mind if itīs the worst time of the year re climate, itīs better to see that before moving out rather than after! I know there is a monsoon season.. and a very hot season.. When you mentioned it never gets less than 27 degrees, does that include night time?

If you have the time and the inclination, I'd be very interested to hear what you thought of Spain in retrospect, and why you are moving out. Its a place I'd considered living at one time, not on the coast but tucked away in the mountains, if there was water available still.

I've also been interested in Turkey - I have visited it a few times, and used to work for the Government there for a while - its one of my favourite countries in Europe, and I had also thought about living there but have not done any research - care to comment ?
