Work Permit to India

Hello, My friend and I are planning to come to india to work as HR Professionals. I am an Indian Origin but a Canadian Citizen. However my friend is Srilankan origin with Canadian Citizen. I would like to know what are the procedures she needs to undertake to obtain the work permit In india. Also, Can she obtain another job once she enters India? As in, If she is cming with initial job offer and later realize she can get better salary can she switch jobs without hassle? Also Would like to know any consultancy that can help her with these procedures and roughly how much does it cost? Thank You

Please search for employment visa: you'll find the answers to your questions.

There is no such thing as an Indian work permit --- only a visa which is issued, in the applicant's home country, against a specific job, which the authorities accept cannot be done by a local person. It is not transferable.

Hi Puppy Dog,

Employment Visa needs to be applied at the Indian High Commission from the country of Origin. I guess you are based in Canada. Just check out the below link for more info.

http://www.india-visa.com/toronto-info.htm

The Indian Company which employs you, would need to forward some of the documents required for submission along with your application. Just to name a few, Contract of Employment, Invitation Letter, Registration Letter of the Company etc. A photo copy would suffice, but you may be required to carry the original signed contract letter when you go the high commission in Canada.

The remaining documents would be the completed application, Passport, necessary photo graphs , applicable fees etc. When you apply for the E Visa ( Employment visa ) ensure that you mention the city of employment in the application form. This would help in avoiding any complication at the FRRO's office as you would need to register yourself within 14 days of arrival in the country.

Or is their another huge process for that? Thank you so much. Also is there any consultancy that can help her with this in Toronto? that anyone might be aware of??

Thank you so much

I did answer that question.

only a visa which is issued ... against a specific job
The visa ceases to be valid when the job ends and it cannot be transferred to another job.

New job, new visa, and that means new visa from back home.

No flexibility at all. Sorry!

Nick-H has already spelled out very clearly the answer to this one.

Exactly what part of his two statements didn't you understand?

To reiterate:
  1. There is no such thing as a "work permit".
  2. If an employer can persuade the authorities that a particular job cannot be filled within India, a foreigner who has been offered the post can apply for an Employment Visa.
  3. Employment Visas have to be applied for in the applicant's home country
  4. If the applicant stops working for that employer they have to leave India

Actually, never mind the visas, I am afraid that the days of being able to easily quit a job for a better one seem to be over just at the moment. There's lots of people here who used to do that and who currently have no job at all.

Hi Puppy,

Nick and Haylo has replied to your query on the visa part.

Regarding Consultants for getting the work permit, there are immigration agents who can do this for you. In our company we engage Deloittes and some times Crown Relocations for rendering this service. Another company is Fragomen, an US based Compnay However all their service charges are rather very high and only Corporates can afford it.

Since you are an individual, you can directly apply to the Indian High Commission, its not all that difficult. May be you should check with your Indian Employer if he has got any tie up with any local immigration agent who can do it for you.

Thank you soo much alll for your reply. So you are saying That work permit for other oringins are hard? That sucks big time. Hmm I know I might sound stupid but then isnt there any other way around this? Because, the job my friend is initially getting will be temp and we thought may be we can switch jobs while we are in India. I really need my friend to tag along with me since my parents will only allow me to come there if she comes with me. Please.... is there any other easier way to this work permit ?? Thank You.... And the person who is offering the job hmm well its not corporate...

As a friend only I'm afraid. The Indian Visa situation has got harder and less flexible over the last year or so.
They have outsourced all their visa app. work to another company, VFS, and consequently made it one rule for all. All visas are now non-transferable.
No exceptions. Your friend will have to get a tourist visa, unless she gets a place at a school or University, and then she can have a Student visa. Same rules though, a letter from the school, duration of course, non transferable. If she leaves school, the visa is ended.
Anyway, like they all said, if you google indian visa, you can get all the info.
