Hi, Swindian. I don't have any direct information about this, but I'm going to suggest an indirect (possible) source of information.

An Indian woman who is a history professor at the University of California at Berkeley writes a knitting blog (a very good one, too!) called Adventures of a Desi Knitter http://desiknitter.com/, and I think she may originally be from the Mumbai area. I bet if you contact her, she could point you in the right direction.
