Studios??

All recording studios have this material stuck everywhere. I don't know whats it called. Go to any recording studio or ask any interior designer/architect about the name of this material.

studios use acoustic foam and other sound absorbent insulation; no idea how expensive.

Generally low frequency sounds are more difficult and will need more expensive material.

Dunno the OP's requirement for soundproofing.

egg cartons

this post reminded me of an impoverished musician friend of mine in england 20 years ago who recorded stuff at home in his bedroom; which he transformed into his "studio" by sticking egg cartons on the walls. it worked !

Egg cartons is more to do with absorbing the sound inside the studio, and splitting up the standing waves that form when sound bounces off the plain walls.

(that's the end of my acoustic knowledge! Damn... should have saved some for later )

I sound-proofed my previous PC (I used it a lot for playing music through the hifi, ect: PCs are a lot noisier than CD players.). Apart from buying low-noise power supply, I lined the inside of the case with this laminate of lead and foam made specially for the job.

Low-budget radio stations used egg cartons, too; I recall being there one night when a visiting guitar player said: "All these egg cartons -- I feel like I've just been laid!" The DJ had to put on a long record because we were laughing so hard.

for what purpose?...to reduce noise generated within the room or noise from outside???

egg crates might work for noise absorption but will have no effect in sound insulation from outside...

When you find it can you please come and line my entire house --- there is some not-so-nearby temple ensuring that they have hired speakers big enough for the whole area to share their festivitoes!

<edit>

festivitoes is such a nice word I thought I'd let it stand.

I meant festivities, of course.
