Cool Weekend Get-aways from Delhi

With all its ups and downs living in Delhi has been great. At this moment I am looking for easy trips to make on three-day weekends. I bought the outlook traveler book for weekend breaks but found that many of the trips in the book are not realistic for a three day trip since you would spend most of your time in the "getting there and back" paragraph area.
Any suggestions for places to visit when you only have three days to do so?

There are many destinations in Haryana, which specialises in Highway Tourism. These are not too far from Delhi and are comfortable for a three days' stay. There is nothing much to see here as such, its basically for getting away from Delhi and enjoying yourself at a resort.

Yeah Morni hill is a very nice & a rather undiscovered place... the only hill station in Haryana... easily motorable from Delhi. Beyond Morni hill u can drive down a road with steep descent & u come to a beautiful lake. There is facility for boating here. Tented accomodation is available & a dormitory too. Boating during sun set is a memorable experience.

Chandigarh is a lovely city, much less pollution, chaos and traffic than any other city I've been to. It was designed in sectors and is a well organised place.

There isn't a huge amount to see but the best part for me is the beautiful Rose Garden which is the biggest in Asia. It's a great place to relax for a few hours, lay on the soft grass and watch the clouds drift by, chat to the friendly locals or just take a snooze in the shade of the huge eucalptys trees.

The quirky Rock Garden is also worth a look and just riding around Sector 18 in a rickshaw is a good way to see how the middle/upper class live in Chandigarh. The place is so clean and green, going back to Delhi was always a downer for me.

Agree with you.

The Sukhna lake is worth seeing too and an hour or two of boating on its waters is a pleasurable experience.

The Sector 17 Super Bazaar complex is worth checking out and is a good place to spend a couple of hours in the evening.

Depends on how you plan to go (drive or bus/taxi). For me a three day trip is usually to Himachal, with one day spent riding to the destination, next day spend exploring the place and next day riding back. Infect just came back from a three day trip to Sarahan, even though it rained most of the time, but I enjoyed the trip a lot. So if you are comfortable with this kind of thing, then anything within 600km radius of Delhi would do fine.

Thanks for all the responses. We want to stay in Delhi for at least three years. I hope we get to travel a lot while we are here and get to know more of this wonderful fascinating country.
With a very active 8 year old boy who suffers from motion sickness traveling by train would be the best option. Overnight trains would be great because this would really help us with the “are we there yet?’ question.
I have not taken a bus here but have seen them going everywhere. Do you think that this would be an easy way to travel with a child?

As you say, trains are your best option. However, there are many places in the hills - in fact the majority - which are not served by trains and here you have to use the road. If your child suffers from motion sickness, then a taxi may be a better option than a bus.

Infact you can cover some part of the distance by train if you are heading to hills but as mentioned by Shimla, last leg would have to be by car/bus.
For Kumaon: the last train station is kathgodam, well connected to Delhi by the train which reaches Kathgodam early in the morning and then departs for Delhi in the night.
for Gharwal: you can take shatabdi till Deharadun or rishikesh.
For himachal, trains to kalka/Shimla or Chandigarh or Chakki bank depending on where you are headed to in Himachal.
For Rajasthan,MP, and UP: you have trains to most of the major destinations and easy to hire a car.

For certain destination you have good Volvo buses which are AC, less bumpy and very comfortable, maybe it would be a good idea to see how your son reacts to these buses.

There's a luxury a/c Volvo bus that takes around 4.5 hours to Chandigarh - I've never seen ANYONE suffer from motion sickness on a Volvo bus (unlike dozens on the less appealing buses that look ready for the scrap heap). The cost is only around 200R or so for an adult and the journey and scenery is quite pleasant. Chandigarh is GREAT - I feel like an aussie ambassador for the city!!

ps. your son would most likely love the Rock Garden and the Lake.
