Transfer of residency
I note from my research that there is large concession for the importation of personal/household items if you qualify for 'TRANSFER OF RESIDENCY' status. As we about to ship a whole lot of personal items over can anyone advise on how you go about obtaining this status and whether you need it before you apply or get it when you arrive at customs? Consular help at this end hasnt been able to advise and the concessions are quite large.
Also what are the tricks about dealing with customs. We are using a company called 'world baggage' and are airfreighting goods. We have brief descriptions on the outside of the boxes. The company has suggested we deal with their agent in Delhi to get the goods out. Any advice? |

ISTR that what was important for me gettng T of R was, a) having a visa other than tourist and b) having a residents permit.
Dealing with customs this end? Let someone else do it. I was interested to see the experience, but our shippers talked me out of it. It was all part of the service anyway, so it didn't cost us any more for them to do it all. They said that it would involve hours of just standing around, in the sun, waiting for people and things to happen. They know the people, they know the procedures. They cleared my container-full for about GBP50 --- which came as a nice surprise ![]()

Back in the 80's when there was no choice in the Indian car market, a guy whom I know brought back a top of the line Mercedes with him from Kuwait and sold it to a imported car dealer within no time. Needless to say he made a huge amount from the sale. For further guidance contact the PRO(Customs) at Mumbai airport, http://www.mumbaicustoms.gov.in/public.asp |

OK, so you are coming on an employment visa.
You are required to register (within 14 days of arrival, I think...) at the FFRO and the registration/residents permit is one piece of paper. See here for details, addresses, etc |
