this is a nightmare....
I thought apartment hunting in Delhi was rough, we just relocated to Bombay and I an STUNNED at the cost of rentals. People had warned me, but I figured the stories were exagerated. They're not. I am looking in Cuffe parade, colaba, churchgate area - need to be near hubby's office in Nariman point. So far I have seen about 20 places that all suck and are extremly expensive. Our budget is 50,000 to 100, 000, for something we really loved. I had my heart set on a funky place in one of the older smaller buildings in Colaba or cuffe parade, any tips? The brokers only want to show me generic flats in big apartment buildings.
Any feedback greatly welcomed. Do people ever go just go into buildings and ask if any apartments are coming up for lease? help...me....please... cj |

Some suggestions
-Look up the property ads in the newspapers, on weekends. -People use brokers because of the legwork and time involved. -indiaproperties.com, 99acres.com, magicbricks.com have online listings. Be warned that people ask for too much on the internet. -walking upto buildings may work, but not often. All have a 'society' (formal association), those are the people to contact. Since these are residents and may not be available, you could get a phone number from somebody and call them.People I know have done this in buildings they really liked. -If you look at colaba, please be aware that part of the area is now seedy. |

An older, smaller bulding may have lot of maintainance issues. If you are not familiar with the area/owners then its better not to opt for such buildings.
A flat in a newer constuction may look soulless but it will have better maintainance, security etc. Colaba is not a good area to live in. Try to opt for cuffe parade. If a longer commute(about 40mins each way in peak time) is ok then parts of worli and mahalaxmi are good. |
