The Great Indian Adventure

I have recently taken up an offer to work in India.
I am a South African citizen with a Indian heritage.
I am keen to know my residential status for purposes of tax calculation. Any one with a great reference of a very good tax professional?

That's immaterial for your tax assessment !

Indian Financial year is April - March. So to tell you your status, please tell us for how many days you will be on Indian soil from April'09 to March'10 ?

Do you have only salary income ? or some income from other sources like Stock Market / Real Estate too ?

If it's simply salary, Govt. of India has trained many Tax Return Preparerers (www.trpscheme.com) If you absolutely need a Very Good Tax Professional, lookout for a Chartered Accountant in your neighbourhood ! If you can't find any, do let IMers know ! We'll post links here.

Your employer should be a good resource. When I worked for a US company in India, I had to file taxes in both countries which, fortunately, my employer handled. In the case of the US and India, a tax treaty exists that eliminates double taxation. You should clarify if something like that exists between SA and India to avoid any surprises at tax time.

The number of days you're in India matters. I think you incur a tax obligation if you're working there 183 days or more of a given tax year, but there may be more to it than that.

There's a little info here but, as it's not a Gov't. of India site, I can't vouch for accuracy.
