Studying in India

Hi,
I am interested in postgraduate study in Mumbai. Does anyone have any idea what fees are like for foreign students and about the application process? I've explored the University of Mumbai website but it wasn't much help. If anyone has any information or experiences of studying in India they'd like to share get in touch.

Thanks

Please do it yourself one by one. That is the easy way!! See the Indian universities lists state wise. Bombay is under the Maharastra state.

There are hords of foreign students here. But many of them are geting the admision on a direct basis and also a number of them are through different schems (govt-govt).You may explore with the local UAE agencies also for any exchange pragrames.

Personally I know only the Birla Institute of Technology & Science, Pilani, offering some courses at Dubai also.

Thumbs up

Hi Oli,
Your idea sounds good! I'm gonna study in Mumbai 4 months from April on, so that I can tell you how I got admited. Please note that I just graduated in engineering, and I wanna continue in computer science: thus, I am most aware of the opportunities in technologic universities.

I got a VSPR (Visiting Student Research Position) at TIFR (a private lab, part of Tata holding, also beeing a doctoral school.) I did not apply to this program, which exists but seems to be only for Indian students. I directly contacted the professor whose research appeals to me, and after he asked me recommandation letters, he arranged every practical points to enable me to sign in.

If I wasn't accepted at TIFR, I would have applied to any IIT (Indian Institute of Technology)

So take my advice: send directly emails to the professors you wanna work with, and if they are interested, they will likely help you.

I'm very xcited to go there. Beach wrote there are "hords of foreign students" but I could not see European or North-American students in the lists, in my lab; I can't understand why, because the Indian education system is really good (specially but not only in Computer Science), and because it's an easy way to go and spend some time in India, which is great FUN!

try JNU

Hi,

Studying in India on a short stint could be a rewarding & exciting experience.

From your profile it seems you are student of social sciences.

To my mind, Jawaharlal Nehry University (JNU for short) in Delhi is the best & most highly respected institute for these studies in India. They have pages for International students on their website & have quite a few international students pursuing their undergraduate & masters studies there. I have a Finnish friend who is studying development economics at JNU and is loving it.
She applied straight to the school and went there as a visiting student because her home university didn't have an exchange student program with JNU.

Their website: http://www.jnu.ac.in/

Good luck!

Anand

Jean..congratulations!!!
TIFR is one of the reputed places of research in india.I'm sure you'll enjoy it at Mumbai. As the name says they are very scientific & knowledgable community.

Yes you are right. Contacting the profs. direct is a better way esp. for the doctoral and research oriented studies.
Again there are not much of students here from NA & europe as compared to other foreign students.

IITs are the best in india & difficult to get in, if you are looking for tech. subjects.
