Well blow me down like a palm tree in a cyclone! Just as an update to my last thread:

so we were robbed yesterday.....

Almost all our gear (two laptops, the digital cam, and the cell phone)has been recovered and crim apprehended. I say that with a slight amount of doubt for two reason:

1)Not everything was recovered. You guessed it - the money is long gone - and the whiskey is no where to be seen (oh the calamity)!

2)Having seen a photo of the guy there is no way he could have fit through the hole in the bars - and apparently he was working on his own!

The family is absolutely stunned that in this city of millions the police managed to get our stuff back! This is not a negative comment about Delhi or the Delhi police. Not even back home where the population of our nearest city is a mere 300,000 would we expected our property could be recovered - so thumbs up to the Delhi police! I only hope the guy they caught is the actual crim - and not some poor guy that happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I am astonished!

It always surprises me how many criminals are reported in the press as having 'confessed'. I don't think I'd like to see the process opf obtaining the confession .

Anyway, a pretty good mark for your local police! Here they like to put pics in the newspaper of police handing back stolen property: I think you're a prime candidate for that

Ah hah!

A sheeter, eh?

Damn good thing for him it didn't end in an 'encounter' .

If they recovered stuff, they probably have the right guy. Or at least one of them.

I would get the cops to find out if there were any insiders who gave these guys information.

Wow. That is amazing. Where did they find it and how did they get their leads?

Do they do "encounters" of thieves?

Not usually.

Though there have been terrible cases of cops atrocities..look up "Bhagalpur blindings" around 1980. Or better not.

Recently, quite a few cases of cops using arbitrary street justice have been highlighted in the media, from different parts of the country. No 'encounters', though.

Very often cops know, through informants, who is operating in their area. They may not show great efficiency, but they aren't dumb.

I dunno this case, but I suspect a combination of foreigner (isn't that true?)/maybe a high end residential area/other factors did the trick.

Or even if they are, they are not deaf!

Oh, and I wasn't really serious about the encounters; just throwing in a bit of colourful (ahem... colourful?) Indian English

We don't know the details yet (and goodness know how long the case will take to come to trial). I'm still wondering what the link is myself. The only person who comes into the house is our housekeeper - and both she and her husband were questioned repeatedly by the cops.

According to the cops - the crim was living rough just across from our place in a reserve? But that doesn't explain why he also robbed another foreigner in Vasant Vihar - which is miles away from us in Chanakyapuri. I don't know....still lots of missing pieces....

Apparently they nabbed the guy when he tried to sell the loot! No other details as yet.

yep...I'm thinking there was an informant as the cops actually caught the guy the week following the robbery (I just haven't posted until now as we only got our possessions back this morning). According to the staff at my wifes work - they think the police were in on it! As for me - I think the Delhi police are just great. And yes - I'm sure being a foreigner in Chanakyapuri probably helped I'm afraid to say.

Was quite happy to get the digital camera and old laptop back. The camera had some shots of our baby that I hadn't downloaded yet - and the old laptop had some of my daughters school work and original stories she had written. That sort of stuff is kinda special.

Its a pity the camera hadn't had a few shots of the thieves added!

Have to say that a consignement of computers that was awaiting despatch from my employers, some years back, was nicked by someone telling the cleaning lady they were the couriers and what was to be collected, please? --- and found, a few weeks later, among a hoard of other stolen stuff. One box didn't look much more than a PC, but was actually quite a fancy server, and the cops said the guy looked like he would faint when told how much it was worth.

So it does happen in London, sometimes, that stuff is recovered.

Looks like they busted a gang that did a spate of robberies. They don't like to have serial robberies on their statistics too long - gangs do get busted therefore from time to time.

90% of cases of criminal charges arise from information received.

If it wasn't for this the police would never achieve anything.

When I visited Goa in '79, way back in the last millenium, I had about 500 rupees stolen from my hotel room, actually a "cottage". Back then it was a lot of money. The thing that was such a relief was that the 500 rupees was folded in my passport, and the passport wasn't stolen.

reviving this thread with an interesting story...

a friend of mine ( studying in Pune ), gets a call from her room mate that her house had been robbed...

funny thing is, the robbers forgot to take the digicam along when they scooted... and yeah, they had recorded some videos of the robbery for kicks... pretty hilarious!

No prizes for guessing whether they were caught or not
