AAAAaaaaarrrrrgggghhhh

Enough with the almost-invisible comments!

Please... it is a pain in the neck: spare a thought for the, errr.... elders among your readership

(This is a personal, not a moderatorial post, though if I were to get moderatorial about it, I suppose I'd have to say that we only accept the standard board font and colour)

Hauling this one back on topic.....

OP

By now, you are probably aware that plenty of people from all different backgrounds - some similar to your own - have babies in India and are happy with the outcome.

Good luck- whatever you decide.

From my understanding, the word Doula in Greek refers to a kind of handmaid or woman servant. In connection with birth, it refers to a woman who is not a midwife, but who is educated with regard to pregnancy, labour and birth. Most doulas have been formally trained, so they understand, but cannot perform, any medical procedures. This woman is with you (and your partner where appropriate) throughout your ante-natal journey and during your labour and the birth of your child. Afterwards, she will visit you in your own home to make sure that all is well with you and your family. She will help with breastfeeding and sleeping issues, if you require such help. Your doula is an emotional support for you and your family, but will not give medical advice - only provide information. Basically, the modern 'doula' does the jobs that an experienced mother or neighbour would have in years gone by. In today's world, many pregnant women live far from their own mothers, or their mothers are unable to give the support the women need, so a doula steps in.

I think that just about covers it. If you've any more questions, please feel free to ask.

Thanks a lot for your clarification Hazel. This was exactly what i had in mind about the particular meaning although the originalGreek one is more "harsh" ,servant with a more intense meaning nowadays

homebirth..

at my daughters homebirth, in england, i had a midwife and a doctor and needed an injection of pethadine (i think it was) just towards the end. so it was good to also have the doc there although i am not sure that he was too pleased about it. that was in 1970.
