Question Shipping Furniture to India

I am looking for recommendations on companies that ship furniture to India from the United States. I have a (small) apartment full of furniture - bed, chest of drawers, sofa, 2 chairs, dining table and 2 chairs, 2 sideboards and probably 20 boxes of books and miscellaneous stuff. Can anyone make a recommendation? I am prepared to wait 3-4 months for delivery - so it can go cargo/crate - but want it to GET there safely. I am not sure on customs etc - its all used stuff but precious to me. I ordered a table FROM India once and it took - I kid you not- 3 YEARS!!!! so i do want to deal with a reputable company. Welcome ideas. Many thanks everyone. Margaret

To which location in India, and your side at Seattle is a port right, with connections to India I presume?

I had no problem with stuff coming to india. it is
at the custom department where i had my problems.

Its not worth the hassle. Sell the furniture and buy more in India.

Hello! Anyone know a good shipping company that I could use to ship stuff from Mumbai- London? I'll only have about the equivalent of 2 large suitcases, and I'm in absolutely no rush, it can take months to arrive. I'd just want a good, cheap option!
Many thanks

We shipped our stuff from London. My company had a recommended list of shipping firms that they use and we got quotes of two of them and basically took the cheapest. They took a lot longer than they said they would, but that actually worked out well for us as we were took a while to find an appartment.

We didn't have that much furniture - mainly records, computer etc. but it didn't cost a ridiculous amount (though it was covered in my relocation package anyway so it's easy for me to say that!).

The company in the UK was called 360 relocations but I think they are UK based - the guys they used at this end were called Writer Relocations and they handled everything fine.

On customs - if you are moving here permanently (which i guess you are if you're moving your furniture) you can geet a Transfer of Residence. This will cover pretty much all of your household belongings and most electrical goods with some exceptinons and allow them to pass through customs without any charge. The shipping firm should be able to help you out with what is required to get this - I just had to fill in a few forms and they did the rest.

Some more info here - I did have a link to the actual Indian customs blurb on it but I can't find that I'm afraid!

Hi Indiapassion - I am waiting for my shipment to arrive (11th Feb) from LA
I used New York Shipping International. - if you would like more info PM me.

Unsure if you are aware, but your goods MUST leave from the US within 30 days of your arrival in India.

All the best.

360 relocations: Me too!

Although I arranged the move through an Indian company, this was the company chosen, out of several that they asked to quote, to handle the packing/storing/shipping at the UK end.

I had not problems at all with customs, because the Indian shipping company handled it all. My visa/resident status qualified me for TR ("Transfer of Residence") allowance, and the duty I paid was negligible.

It is quite true that one can furnish and equip a place easily for the price of the shipping/storage, but if you simply do not want to be torn away from your worldy possessions, or the company is paying, then go for it!

The vital thing is to get a door to door service. Absolutely avoid anything which is offerred as to port only: it means that you have to handle all the business of collection and customs clearance. I've done it for a small shipment of three boxes of zero customs value stuff: it was an experience, it can be done, but it really is better to pay someone else. Probably cheaper in the end too!
