School Admission - Waiting Lists?

So I heard mentioned in another thread that most private schools have long waiting lists-someone mentioned one that was eight months long.

We'll be going to India in April. Obviously, we can't get them enrolled in a school before we get there. What do you do in the meantime with the children if they have to wait to get into school? Homeschool them?

Also, will they take them in after the school year has begun?

Will there be more of a waiting list in the city than further away or the same for both?

Sorry if this has been already answered before.

Mod Note : I have edited the title to the thread to make it clear that you are asking about school admission waiting lists.

School report....Must try harder!

Many people will look at the thread title and think you're asking about railway ticket waiting lists, and maybe 1% of members will think school waiting lists.

A good thread title is as vital as details if you want a worthwhile answer.

And regarding details.....You should mention what Indian state you'll be in, and what city, as well as the age of your child, boy or girl?

Are you moving to India?

Are you an NRI or PIO?

That is not an assumption I would make, it is worth contacting the school of your choice to ask whether you can enter the waiting list before you arrive.

If you don't want to enrol your kids in a school purely on recommendations and without visitng it, you can always fly over beforehand to check things out. That's not a bad plan idea anyway, especially if you have never visited India before.

My suggestion would be to put them on the waiting list before you arrive (and I think its my comment you might be referring to about waiting 8 months to get a place in a school - as that's how long it took for my daughter to get into a class once we got here).

and not to make it sound even worse - she was actually on a waiting list a year before we even arrived - so it was 20 months in total! Yes - I did the home school thing but was well supported (i.e - as nationals living overseas we had access to our home education system via a correspondence school model - which enrolled our daughter into a class, sent lessons, texts, material to us, had an online site to enable us to access lessons, class forum and chat, audio lessons with an assigned teacher, and so on). Our daughter was in a virtual class of 12 students spread throughout the world!

Depending on what schools you choose - putting them on a waiting list before you arrive will probably be ok. Waiting lists for schools are fairly common - and if its an area where foreign companies, etc are going then they will probably be well use to getting enquiries from overseas. Whether or not they can start part way through the year - first things first, get them onto a list as soon as you can. Until they have a place they wont be able to start anyway.

I never had to put my kids on a waiting list for a school in India. We arrived mid term for DPS in Pune, they accepted our kids on the basis of a huge building fund (1.5 lakh each which is about sterling pounds 1875.00) and another international school in Pune, was willing to accept mid term, without anyfurther dosh. My kids are in DPS Sushant Lok / Gurgaon, and again we arrived mid term, we had a verbal agreement with DPS Vasant Kunj (Delhi) too, but thought it best to find a school closer to home, but this time we were going to pay 1.5 lakhs, and luckily they didnt ask for it.

Thanks for that advice. I'll go ahead and do that!
