Salaries in Bangalore and Hyderabad
Hi there,
I might be moving to Bangalore or Hyderabad, and I would like a bit of help deciding about the salary I should ask for (as both companies are asking me for me to start the negotiations). Both are IT international companies, and I am an IT consultant with 6 years experience. I know again, that the salary won't be like in Europe, but what would be a good reasonable salary that allows me to live comfortable, and save some money for when I return to Europe. Is for example 2,500.000 Rupis as a basic salary (having also the rest of the package, accommodation, medical insurance...etc) a reasonable number? too much? too little? ok? :-) I read about the high tax in India so.... Thanks! |

Everything depends on your area of expertise and whether you are joing a consulting/product firm.
On a rough scale the industry standard here is around 1.5-2.0 lakh per year of experience in software industry. 1.5/year is a good/ok pay anything more than that is definitely a very good one. Consulting firms pay on the lesser side. Did you say 2,500 Rs or 2,500,000Rs |

rebecca....
i m sure u r underquoting ur salary expectations....a person in the industry with six years experience deserves much more than 2500 INR..... u ask for what u were earning in SG ( whatever ur location is) converted into indian rupees....... i m sure u will earn not less than 10000 INR basic plus incentives.. ur quotation of 2500 rupis is way too low.... all the best |

2500000 per annum works out to ~ 200000 per month before taxes aand ~ 400000 per yr of exp. Over the ast few months I have noticed that that is the going salary range an MNC will give someone with US / European experience in Bangalore. Did you say yr accomodation was paid for ? if so nothing like it ... JUMP on it |

Salaries in Hyderabad
Hi Rebecca,
I'm a hyderabadi settled in Hyderabad 4 years till now.Dont worry about the cost factor since cost of living is cheapest in south india. You will find Bangalore, chennai followed by Kerala are the costliest places to live. My house expense including rent wont cross more than Rs.5,000/- ( House Rent : Rs.2000 ( for 3 bedroom individual house with seperate garage for car parking : House Advance : 1 month only ) + 3000 for food, conveyance, living.Travelling in hyderabad from east to south ( anythwere to anywhere ) wont cost more than an hour & eating, food are very cheap. Dont choose Bangalore if cost is a factor & hyderabad is a hundred times better than B;lore. Thanks-Sangitha |

Sangitha,
Rs 2000 per month for a 3 bedroom house in Hyderabad? which part of the city are you talking about? Cost of living in Hyderabad is shooting up quite fast. I agree it is slightly better than Bangalore or Chennai, but to get a decent flat in a decent locality with water etc., you have to pay good money. A 3 bedroom pad in my area goes for around 10-12 K. And this is not Banjara hills or Jubilee hills. But with 2,500,000 you can live like a King ( or Queen) in Hyderabad ![]() |

25 lakh per annum seems like a very good salary for India.
If you can get that + a package, I would go for it right away. But even without a package you will be able to live very very comfortably, even after taxes, even in Bangalore. |

You may want explore structuring your "package" to reduce the income tax liability. It is quite common to receive housing/ car allowances etc. to that effect. |

i know indians in the industry who make 30-40k per month, with just a couple years of experience. wages easily go into the 40-60k Rs/mo range. don't sell yourself short. if you are good at what you do, you are worth more than the locals, simply for adding diversity to their experience base.
it is typical for american companies to pay their employees abroad their normal american wage plus as a living abroad bonus. american companies see foreign assignments as unattractive for most employees. therefore, i'd suggest asking for your european salary. international companies are used to paying international wages. just because you are on indian soil doesn't mean you are worth one penny less to them. and, if your request is too high, let them share with you what they are prepared to pay. no reason to sell yourself short by quoting an indian wage. finally, keep in mind that your living expenses are likely much higher than an indians who is in your position. you've got flights home, "needs" to leave india for vacation (thailand is a necessity, is it not?), international telephone calls (well, now you can use Skype), higher costs per person for housing (they often live with family or in cheap boarding houses, you likely won't), higher transportation costs, higher food costs (western imported foods can be expensive, and no mom/wife to cook dinner for you so more eating out), etc. if you need to go the route of buying pots and pans, a fridge, stove, etc, expect that you'll lose a fair bit from that too. furnishings/decorations. etc, etc, etc. and if you get seriously sick, you might choose to fly to singapore for healthcare conditions that more closely resemble your western expectations. so, ask your euro wage. it is the best place to start your negotiations.
