Sigh.. if only I owned a house or apartment here - the trouble with the 6 month thing is that you have to either find a sub-letter or search for a new house when you get back or continue to pay exorbitant rent for an empty house.

The Bali thing is an interesting comparison - many people retire there, they actually have a retirement visa aimed at attracting wealthier self funded westerners to move there. Others however can only get a 1 month visa, but its amazing how many live there very long term, renewing their visas each month. Of course the extreme and normative level of corruption there makes such things doable I guess .. people seem to take all that very much in their stride.

One of the biggest costs of this coming/going lifestyle is the flights. Probably that (especially if you do two trips a year) would dwarf your rent.

You can still do it. You just have to find somewhere that is not in the spotlight, so you can rent cheaply.

Either you go for a full-blown officially-recognised business (please see the reasons why not on other threads) or you have to work within the limits of tourist visa controls which are almost certain to get stricter.

Yes indeed - the flights, you know I was thinking today it would almost be better to live in Bali permanently and then go on extended stays in India. In Bali you can rent your house and staff very easily to tourists, many people do it, and the flights between the 2 are WAY cheaper!

Anyway, whatever happens, I'm definitely planning an extended stay in the next year or so - maybe 3 months - I really want to get some writing done and really experience everyday life there instead of just travelling. I also want to spend some time down your end of the country Nick!

Way OT i know, could say we were filling in the gaps, or referring to obtuse retirement plans, like as referred to in the site you flagged. "Charan Das, originally an American, lived as a sadhu in India for over twenty years. Cheerful and without cares, he roamed the country".

I saw a lot of him over the years as he was a Vaisnava, and was in Vrindavan often - i heard his body is katam hoggia now though.

I am sorry but I find the repeated posts with with extensive quotes from a former member (account closed) pointless. If there is so much desire to opine voluminously (on topics with very marginal connection to the original topic - "Retire in Indian and live off interest payments?" - why not start your own thread with more appropriate topic?

Agree...any way we can move this to a thread of its own and return to the original subject?

Sorry to hear that. I met Charan Das once '89. He and a high school teacher of mine knew each other from way back. Did he finish recently? Word of him was scant back in the late 90s and we were left wondering.

His favorite chronic disease was malaria, because it was so humbling.

Permanently retired yeah and no interest due or collectable any longer... good for CD. I liked and respected the fearless idiosyncratic man that he was, jai Radhe.

And what is the latest on returning to India? Has any one done it in the past year? Can you share your experience?
