World's best places to retire

Quote:
Cuenca, Ecuador's third-largest city, is a well-preserved colonial city of cobblestone streets and dramatic period architecture, with modern suburbs, shopping and all the comforts American retirees might expect. Yet they can live there -- and well -- for about $17,000 a year, the magazine says. (Visit Bing for a photo gallery of Cuenca.)

Cuenca and Ecuador in particular have so much to offer, says International Living Managing Editor Laura Sheridan, that the country bumped Mexico from the top spot in the publication's Annual Retirement Index, released last month.

I read that article the other day and was very surprised to see Italy and France in the top six. I think they got extra points for culture, safety & infrastructure because housing & cost of living wasn't that great! I would love to live in Italy but they don't seem to have factored in the weak dollar against the Euro.

India isn't even on it because you can't just retire there!! All those visa issues again!

Mexico is closest to me here in the U.S. and Mazatlan looks nice

Central America seems like a decent option too. Relatively small countries, low cost of living, easy access to two oceans -- sunrise on the Caribbean, sunset the same day on the Atlantic...

And to keep the post from being OT, I think some of the smaller Kerala cities are still a decent deal, though there's that pesky visa issue.

Anyone have comments on the stretch of beach between Goa and Mangalore? Is it humid there (I would expect it to be). THinking of visiting and looking for a cotttage.

I'm planning to move to Dehradun on a trial basis and hoping that Rs.25,000 to Rs. 30,000 should be good enough for the family of 4.

I can say that this is my temporary retirement for 1 to 3 years till I learn how to survive locally.

To answer the original question of living off of interest, it all depends.
1) If you are nearing retirement or retired then it's absolutely feasible to comfortable live in small to mid size city.

2) If you are going to carry responsibility then the answer to permanent retirement is no.
