renouncing indian citizenship on behalf of children
I was wondering if anyone could tell me if I am allowed to renounce the indian citizenship of my kids if i were to have any in India? I am Canadian and i think it would be better if my children had Canadian passports with OCI status. Any advice?

Are both you and your partner canadian citizens? In that case any kid you have(in India)will not have Indian citizenship in the first place.
If you partner is an Indian citizen then a kid will have indian citizenship but that can be renounced. there have been discussions in this forum about how to do it. check through some of the older threads. |

Dual nationality can be an advantage! Canada recognises dual nationality, but India does not (as yet).

As I believe, your kids would get a Canadian passport/nationality with OCI if you apply for it. Then after living for so many years in India, you and your kids can get Indian nationality if you give up your Canadian citizenship. It's up to you if you want to do that.

Not every country awards citizenship just because one is born there; this is done by USA, Canada and a few other countries. But the child can always claim the citizenship of one's parents. When both alternatives are are available, the parents get to choose, by filing papers with the appropriate government. There is nothing to 'renounce'. |

My daughter was born here in India. We got her an American passport with a PIO card - that was FAR easier than trying to get her an Indian passport with an American green card. Yechhhh...the vision of paperwork gives me chills...
Check the Canadian consulate in Mumbai's website. They should have a section that deals with cases like this. I know the American consulate does.
