But doesn't the whole Universe end then?

Or does it just lose it's entitlement to PIO card?

I think that's when sexism is finally stamped out - once and for good.

I doubt if anyonce can go back the reverse the real estate transactions. I will guess that your signature will continued to be required if neede. However, you will not be able to continue to purchase property.

Ok, I know this thread's gone cold, but I wish to comment on a very specific aspect brought up - this refers only to surviving foreign spouses of Indian citizens who were entitled to and already residing in India by virtue of marriage:
Death cannot do you part - from India that is.
If you have a 5-year RP, that can be extended, no issue.
If you apply for a PIO card in India, that will be granted, no issue. I can't comment on the renewal part, becos obviously no PIOCs issued anywhere are up for renewal yet.
Only that it seems strange to me, that if you can get one in India after death-of-spouse, that you cannot get it extended. My take is that you can in future.

I assure that the above is based on a few cases I personally know of in Delhi.

I like your optimism, but immigration departments, worldwide, are not known for their sense of humanity.

All true, and at the risk of boring the hell out of everyone, as we've discussed often enough, open to different interpretations from different officials.
But again, sticking only to the subject of those resident in India, I can only advise taking the matter to court as and when it arises. Yes, messy and time-consuming, but the fact is that the GOI like many govts, is not immune to making laws which do not pass constitutional muster. If only more such legal challenges were made (hey 99.9% affect us citizens directly) they wudn't try it next time so easily.

Think I'll put this theme to sleep now

I just hope I'm never in a position to be able to report back on this one!
