Paying by cheque to another city
I seem to have a head scratcher of a problem. I finally got around to opening a bank account in India, with ICICI. Now, want to send a cheque to a firm in Delhi and another to an NGO in Chennai as a donation. I can’t log into my online banking account at the moment (waiting the 8 working days for a new password tom come in the mail - arrggghhh), so I can’t pay them electronically. Physically showing up at SBI (the bank that the company in Delhi uses) and depositing my cheque on their account limits me to RS 25,000 and I need to pay more than that, plus my local SBI branch seems to have a policy of only allowing non-home transactions in Blue Moon Tuesdays when Venus and Jupiter are in conjunction.
Presumably, I’d have to have something (cheque? demand draft?) sent via courier. How is this typically done? What are the dangers and pitfalls?

Just make a crossed cheque and courier it.
![]() The only danger is the cheque getting lost in transit, you can always put a stop payment in that. But it has never happened to me. |

Go to your ICICI branch(or any other branch). tell them you want to get a demand draft.
you will need the account name, account number and branch code of the firm in delhi. the DD should be done in 10-15 mins. you may or maynot be charged for it(depends on the kind of account you have). Courier the DD through a reliable company like blue dart or DTDC. Blue dart is about 2-3 times as expensive as DTDC but they will get it delivered the next day from bangalore to delhi. DTDC may take 3 days. |

Thanks all!
I went ahead and made up a DD. It was a relatively painless experience. As far as DTDC goes, in my experience, the delivery time seems to be independent of distance. I've seen them take longer (based on tracking info) to take a parcel across town than to Delhi. Go figure! |

Just saw this thread: For future reference
Many bank cheques are payable at par across the country, certainly in cities. I vaguely recall SBI promising this, too. Many private and other banks certainly do, don't know about ICICI Any cheque is payable anywhere in india, it may take a few days at the other end and there may be bank charges- quite low. This is, of course, if a bank does not pay at par across India. One can always add the bank charges to the cheque amount and mail it (a/c payee only) so the recipient does not lose any money. |
