and that is what should be expected from a 256 line anywhere in the world.

Yet another good, humourous post but I suspect OP gets into situations just so he can write about it

Aren't you better off with a 56K modem over a voice line?

The issue with a 56K modem are too many to mention from connection breakages(2 hrs. here in pune (the area where Iam) which is connected nicely) to every 1/2 hr. or so. The transfer speed is between 8-12 Kbps & varies widely & they're in-fact discouraging the use of plain dial-up modem. The backbone is going totally digital by offering ADSL & ADSL2(some pilot projects in progress) so it's better to be on ADSL. The only issue perhaps with ADSL is it's good only if u're living in one place for long. If u're keen to move (read travel) then having an internal/external modem with connection as a backup is also nice.

Some confusion over bits and bytes. They measure the line speed in bits .... 256Kb, 64Kb. Your computer gives you the dowload speed in Bytes ... 30KB etc.

8 bits to a Byte. 30KB * 8 = 240Kb which is just fine for a 256 connection.

No, he wouldn't be better off with a 56Kb dial-up!

I Need Some 0's For The Garden!!

At long last I'm back online, been out of service totally for past 24 hours and has cost me a few hundred quid in the process as all my work is reliant on net connection.

Its a huge improvement today too, I got 47kbps now so in fact I'm still unable to work and Sify don't give a shit.

The package I'm paying for is actually supposed to give me 256 or more, there is a problem at my complex and Sify are here now sorting it, hopefully quickly!

Had another hilarious experience this morning, I needed a piece of hose pipe for washing the terrace, if anybody remembers (who could forget) the famous 2 Ronnies sketch, then you can just imagine how much fun I had getting my piece of hose this morning!

I am looking back on several funny experiences to write about but I figure if I put too many on here then none of you stingey buggers will buy the book!

Cheers
Malc

<rant> My plumber and his mate came to fix a leak between the lavatory sistern and the bowl.

Having dismantled it, he told me that it needed a new washer. They re-assembled the lavatory, packed their tools and told me they were going to buy a new washer.

Three weeks later they appeared with the new washer. From the looks on thier faces you would have thought that they had only been gone for 20 minutes! They fitted the washer and the lavatory still leaked.

The plumber proudly announced, "It is 90% mended, Sir".

Five months later it is still 90% mended, but at least it's a wet bathroom with a sloping floor and a drain in the corner! </rant>

I think you just may as well carry on here. We don't get many books in the nether regions so it's either here or I'll have to ask Phantom to get me a copy

How funny, I have exactly that same situation too, every time he fixes one leek and leaves, another appears but its never leaking when he leaves, i've pretty much given up on it as you have and just let the bloody thing drip now!
