Question Moving to India

Im a 20 year old male living in Sweden.
Im getting more and more fixed on the idea of moving to a other country, India or Thailand.

I have a income every month $1000, would this be enough for India? I need internetaccess ;D I will hopefully start earning more soon, its a hobby income.

Well do you have any good tips on cities to live in? On what kind of apartment, house or something I shall look for?

How much would it cost for a nice apartment, internetaccess (anyway nearby). Any cities or parts were alot of expats live?

What about taxe and stuff If I would live in India?

If you have never been to India before I would suggest that you take a holiday there first before you decide if it is for you.
Do you want to live a western style existence in India, or would you like to adopt an Indian style way of life,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Hi,

I think your question is fairly broad and it may be impossible to cover all the things in one reply.. and I presume you would want several opinions on many questions (the subjective ones). It may be useful to search some of the older threads which have covered this.

To answer some of your questions at least

- Internet access.. is now available practically everywhere.. Cybercafe rates may vary marginally from place to place and quality of connection and would be around Rs. 30 (approx. 0.70 cents) per hour. In larger cities you would find cybercafes within walking distance, from almost anywhere you may choose to live.

Most residential connections are still dial up connections, however in larger cities cable connections and DSL connections shared through a LAN etc.. provided by TV cable operators are now becoming popular.

Taxes.. Personal income tax depends on your residence status. briefly, you would usually be taxed on your Indian income and your international income would be free of tax.. Income tax defines status as Non-resident, Not ordinarily resident and resident.

You would continue to be Not ordinarily resident for quite some time after arrival. whereas for each year.. you are a non-resident, if you stay for less than 181 days in India.

I would guess this is a question which should be answered taking in view your specific circumstances, but essentially You pay taxes for your Indian income only for the first few years, while you are NOR.

Choice of cities is subjective.. and apartment rentals etc.. would depend on which city, which area, and the size and could vary widely.. basic single rooms in popular areas, conveniently located, in Delhi, could be available for a about Rs. 3,000 to 6,000 .. typically unfurnished, or very basic furniture.

two room barsatis ( top floor accomodation, which is usually half floor construction and a terrace.. this was once very popular for young couples and small families.. are no disappearing ) could be available for about Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 10,000/- .

Expect to pay about 3 months advance rental and security deposit.

Distances in Delhi are fairly large, so if you intend to live here for a long period, you m ay consider buying a car or a motor cycle. Even though new investments are being made in Metro etc.. public transport remains and is likely to remain at least for a few years, quite deficient.

I may make another post.. to discuss (albeit,in somewhat limited manner and possibly biased manner, as I have almost always lived in Delhi )

Foreign nationals are not allowed to stay in India for more than 6 months at a time unless they have a work visa. In your case it appears that the only way for you to be able to stay for an extended period would be if you were to open a business in India. You would then be eligible for a business visa which would allow you to stay for a very long time.

Do you have any idea of what to do in India?
It is a very special place so you better check it out for yourself rather than looking on some photos.
You really have to experience it yourself and not just looking at "Monsoon wedding" on a rental video thinking that this is the place for me with just lovely people and the sun on your side...

Im just living a very relaxed lifestyle.

People move all the time, so what the problem?

If you're really planning to move blindly to India or Thailand, I'd recommend Thailand. I wouldn't recommend moving blindly, however, although a certain amount of denial may be necessary to move to India.
