Moving back to India

Hi,
I am willing to relocate to India(Ahmedabad). Me and my husband work here and make about $55k together. We both are 28 so I am thinking that it might be too early for me to think that. We have house, office, land and two businesses there which are doing great. My son is 5 so i think its a right time for us to go there. We are thinking about moving there next year as we have to wait for citizenship. Also my company provides us free masters so I don't know if we should complete it or not. If I do then it will take 2more years. I always think about India and USA and get confused. Please advise.
Thank you so much for your time.

It is your personal choice but do keep in mind that the lifestyle in US and India are still very different.

Standard of living in US with 55k income

Just curious, what type of work you do in US? 55k joint income is pretty low for Chicago area. Is it typo?

With house, office, land and two well running businesses in India, your standard of living may be lot better in India than what you will have in US with 55k income.

What is it that confuses you? Your post is so vague, I don't even know where to start.

Take a little time to think and take a small step!

fthakkar,

This is not a step to be taken lightly.. as it may have repercussions on your life, going forward. You sound like you emigrated rom India to the US. Couple of excercises you could try, before doing anything:

a.)To know where you are going, it is good to know where you are coming from.. try and list your life history, why you moved to the US, and what dreams you may have had. Ask yourself if you still want to pursue them, and are willing to hit a few speed bumps on the way.

b.) You mention your father has a business, and you have housing etc taken care of. In that case, what would you expect the company provided master's degree to do for you? Is it just something opportunistic, while you wait for your citizenship?

c) If you return to India, do you expect it to be a permanent move? Or are you just trying to test and see if your family business is a good fit for you? In which case something other than moving your entire family, lock stock and barrel, might be a lower risk option. But if the family offers you a once in a lifetime opportunity to do something you always dreamed about.. e.g. make a ton of money, or build a huge business, etc.. then this may be something you want to do. Just think it through.

d)Personally I have had the opportunity to return to India, but I value the fresh air, water, and many of the institutions in the US, too much, and something I do not want to give up. It may be a totally different case for someone else, but this is my preference. Of course thing may change in the future..we all learn continually..

Recently went back to India

As Boston123 mentioned, you need to think this through before going back.

I went through the same decision making few years back. My company was opening a new office in India. I found the challenge of being in the new center and helping it grow very interesting. Of course, being among your relatives and old friends gives you a nice feeling.

At the same time, keep in mind that I still miss certain aspects of the American life - Driving, ease of getting certain things, holidays and vacations, forests....

In the end, I decided to go back since I valued the 1st option above the 2nd one.

Take your time and make a decision. And more importantly, don't regret the decision and live with it.

Just to make you feel at home...

Please write 'you' and not 'u'

SMS abbreviations not allowed!

i don't get the usual point made against sms abbreviations..they are not that hard to understand.
That 'for many users of Indiamike, English is not their first or second language etc', does not imply that sms abbreviations are harder to understand than, say, idioms, saws, colloquialisms, or simply the Queen's English itself, unadulterated.
So I don't think sms abbreviations should be banned because they are hard to understand - they are not. However, to the extent that lazy writing represents sloppy thinking, sms text should be discouraged.I just hope this is the message that erring posters get.

Pardon the bluntness, but if you can drop the attitude for a moment and cogently share what some of your experiences and observations are that make you feel this way about Europe, it might actually be a worthwhile conversation.

That would be too easy. There is a jobs program called the European Commission to do precisely the opposite.

You should come to America. We can really show you what dogs really work like. As far as the lifestyle goes, Europe is perhaps the most generous in lifestyle enhancing work conditions.

My personal experience working in Germany was that people seemed more interested in planning vacations than working. There was a religious holiday of some sort on Thursday every other week during the Spring and absenteeism on Friday was endemic. Even when someone was willing to work, they'd worry about union contract limitations. You needed permission from senior management to work on Saturdays and from God to work on Sundays. Takes out 30% of the week right there

i do not agree. my brain literally suspends processing when i encounter sms lingo...

Edit: its easy to understand for folks that are used to it. generalizing that to sms lingo is not hard to understand would be incorrect.

think it through

To the original post, I would start by making a PROs and CONs list. It is easy to get emotionally drawn into thinking romantically about a situation different from the one you are current in. But you know what they say about the grass always being greener on the other side. When considering moving somewhere make sure you consider the practicalities of everyday life - that may translate into the infrastructure-rich United States, or maybe the convenience of healthy eating in India, etc.

Don't think anyone on this board can tell you why you should choose one place over another. This is a very personal decision. You don't need to be afraid of taking risks, but definitely do your due diligence, and think it through.
