Mary Oberne - Sad News

Those who were around Goa in the late 60s and early 70s might remember Mary Oberne, who lived at Baga Beach, just across the path from Tito's "Rich Davy Restaurant." She was good friends with Tito and Lucille, and with so many others who passed through the area.

Mary had two or three children while living in that house, with the help of a local midwife, and was a fixture in the area for several years. I met her much later, but had been hearing about her for years.

It's my sad place to report that Mary has died, in Amsterdam, at age 63. Here's the letter her daughter sent out:

On sept 5,2006 at 12pm my mother passed away peacefully in her sleep. It is the way she would have wanted to go as she was terrafied of pain. My boyfriend Vince who was the first one with her body after her spirt left said ''the Angels came for her,and she went with them peacefully'' her body was burned that day as the sun was going down and one more bright star shone in the sky that night.

my brothers and her sister will be coming out to Goa in Dec.(i am getting married on the 29th) and we will be scattering her ashes into th Baga river the first week of Jan.You are all most welcome to join us!!She had a big heart with enough room in it for the world and she loved all of you dearly!!Peace Love and Laughter to you all!!!!!!OM

Condolences to Mary's family

Thank you for the information about Mary. She will be missed. I knew Mary when she was living up in Mussoorie in the late 1970's. Always generous, intelligent, fair, hospitable, funny, warm and honest. She taught me how to make delicious jam out of the rhododendron flowers, gathered along the Mussoorie ridge by Woodstock School. I enjoyed her independent, caring personality. She was and always will be an unforgettable and dear character to those who knew her. As a small example of her large kindness, when I was last in Amsterdam to undergo surgery in 1995, Mary and Mila Jansen were kind enough to pick me up at the airport, help me find an excellent doctor, put me up as their guest and lovingly take care of me. I loved Mary's creative spirit, sense of style, her open-heartedness towards life and gentle sense of humor. I'm glad that in the end her death at home was both peaceful and painless. My prayers for her and loving thoughts for her children.

Mary: a lovely mischievous angel

I first met Mary in Calcutta in 1967. Such a lovely being, with a brilliant smile and sparkling eyes, sharp and witty and wonderful. We traveled together to Kathmandu and rented an apartment there in a very old part of town. What a great and magical time it was! Tiger-stripped taxi cabs, and stars the size of saucers. Mary laughed and/or cried and sang and played guitar, and always shared her heart as well as her home. She was utterly in love with life. Generous and giving, it was such a pleasure to be in her company, and I so admired how she was always able to reach out to others in compassion. Over the decades I watched her character deepen and bloom, and her babies grow into beautiful children. Her spirit of love and nurturing is an everlasting bequest to them and to us all. She will be missed but never forgotten.
