Married to Indian Nationals.
well this is all very timely, thank you!
I went out ot get my haircut today, came back and found my apartment taken over by small bitey ants. first of all this means that they were here in the AM and the maid ignored them. it also means that @#*^&@*$^&(@*&$)@(*@$#)(*#
glad about the various recipies for getting rid of them. will try the bloody mary first tho as am thoroughly pissed that my atta has gone for a toss and the buggers also got into my BEDSHEETS for no good reason.
PS, I love squirrels too! LOL... we also have a lot of parakeets, some baby minahs, about 30 kites (I hope the baby minahs stay hout of sight), 2 barn owls (a mated pair...awwwww), and more geckos than I can count. I love the geckos. I want one the size of a monitor lizzard that only likes bugs and doesn't bite people. :P

another thing which seemed to help in bombay was a thimbleful of kerosene in the mop water.

I don't like spraying with anything as it seems to kill me more than the insects. I just swat at them and pout. My husband on the other hand is seemingly never without the mortein. (cough cough)

well I bet it is effective, but doesn't it leave everything smelling like @$$?

hee!yeah we got two owls that hang out at dusk in a nook in the building next to ours. one is white and the other is grey. they are pretty cool and sometimes come up to sit on the terrace when we are up there. they stay far away, though, which is good.
we are talking about people coming from various backgrounds and economic status. I do agree that if you marry a INDIAN - some eye raising is there and if you are a female-no doubt that some guys may think ' otherwise'also.
My point is what does it matter at all? In India- white skin and pink face..is a craze because WE think that is SEXY..
Now- even after being rules by WHITE for more than 250 years, we still love them. WE DO NOT HATE BRITISH and rather we are fan half of PUNJAB is settled in BRITAIN, USA and CANADA.
You get extra attention- you can not help in that. You are a ' thing' to watch...you can not help...you might have seen that usualy WOMEN are interested in WHAT YOU EAT and WHAT YOU WEAR.
Men are usualy not interested in these things-they r busy looking at something which pleased thier eyes !
I think- somewhere you like having attention also but what i do not like is the way someone in BANGLORE treated you or type of people, meeting, wedding etc where people comment or think so CHEAP for you.
For being a INDIAN- I apologise for this...but again..this is WHAT INDIA is all about...you have it all in one SHOT !
Good and bad people exists everywhere...only in INDIA you will find them living so closely..without any problem while having all PROBLEMS !!

see..some of us were wondering how did ants became the main topic here...but I think now it's clear! although we do have in common the fact that we are all foreigners married to Indians...we are after all from different parts of the world and different social classes..and most surely the Indians we married are too from different classes....so the problems we face tend to be somewhat different....but it's good to know that at least ants transcend all these barriers
...so they're the real unifying thread here

Since we are talking about foreigners, why not nigerians or chinese or lebanese as well? hehe.. There is distinct cultural bias towards white males than those of other races...not that i have anything against my white brothers
Indeed... just for an example, people I know here seem to think that all black people are 'Nigerian' and treat them with suspicion. That is very bad.
Looks like that wonderful 'English-media education' under discussion in another thread is not doing a very good job of discrediting some of the world's worst stereotypes!

No alcohol allowed at most office parties in the USA these days.
Regarding ants: I don't know if there is a comparable Indian product, but what works great here are the bait traps. The ants take the bait back to their nests and it kills everything. The lowest tech bait traps use boric acid but the more expensive versions have other pesticides and they are very effective.
